so my starter solenoid was just clicking from time to time, like 3 out of 5 starts... but it would recover.. did a search, replaced the wires, fixed. wanted to say thanks to the forums for helping me fix the issue.
I replaced the main power to the starter with 4 Gauge wire, used compression lugs from home depot as they are a heavier duty than what I could find. I redid the control wire that engages the starter side solenoid. I also replaced the ground to frame wire with what was left of the 4 gauge, as well as the positive side wire to the fender solenoid. I used the heavy duty compression lugs on all these wires and heat-shrink wrapped the lug-to-wire joints. All this really cleaned up my under hood situation, as well as made every attempt to start a success. The entire length of these wires were covered in split tubing to give it the friction protection they need.
one thing I noticed while smacking around under the hood, the grounding cable for my hood was very deteriorated... its very brittle and "tore" .. My concern here is that the ground wire for the engine (hooks to previously mentioned firewall ground lug, is of the same woven bare wire matterial... any ideas on where this material can be found, and what its called? (might as well prevent that future disaster, right?)
