2007 Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0 VIN E 2wd 5r55s 140k miles. Recently bought the vehicle getting p0741 TCC performance ot stuck off. Fluid looks clean obviously been flushed. When watched lock up data I could see the lock up converter would engage when when commanded and have no slip sometimes most when first driving. After getting hot it did not look like TCC was engaging when commanded, full slip detected with 100% lock up no spikes in graph or shuddering. I decided to install trans go kit with new tcc valve and spring and pressure relief valves. There was some fine shiny metal on main valve body plate, I scraped and replaced gaskets. After reassemble filled with new fluid first test drive tcc was not working got slip code immediately. I restarted vehicle and tcc was working perfectly no slip and could feel the extra power pulling up hills. The next day was back to slipping on a short drive. I am going to double check fluid level tomorrow on a lift when perfectly level, fluid seemed aerated on the initial fill and may bot have been perfectly level on jack stands. Any thoughts on next steps to diag.

Well had this same problem last year. It was not a cheap fix at a local independent transmission shop but cheaper than the dealer or replacing the transmission. This is just from what the live data I have watched while driving the tcc will not lock up until trans temp is around 116°f coolant temp is basicly 190°f. Also the tcc typically will unlock when pulling hills this can feel like a downshift but it is not.

For the repair I actually dont know exactly what was done (will have to check the repair order if i can find it) but from the cost I am guessing the entire valve body was replaced or something expensive. I do know the shop did some trubleshooting and did replace the tcc solinoid but that didn't fix it. If i can find the service papers I will post what exactly was replaced.

Thanks I would definitely like to know what they did if you find it. I believe the fluid was getting aerated from bad filter after I installed the trans go shift kit so I went back in and replaced filter confirmed fluid was at proper level. So far I believe it is working properly

Ok here is what they found on my truck.

They checked the solonoid wiring and found some water damage.
They replaced solonoid pack and the problem was not fixed.
They recommend to replace valve body and torque converter due to excessive wear.

So the fix was ro replaced the valve body, solonoid pack, torque converter, along with the pump seal.

I don't think the torque converter needed to be replaced but with 186k miles with no fluid changes I am suprized the transmission didn't just grenade. Side note there may have been one fluid change but I dont have record of it.

Sounds like they were just covering everything there I'm pretty sure my torque converter clutch is fine because when it works it doesn't slip at all. After install the trans go valve kit and replacing the filter it is 80% better. Still am have a harsh 2-1 down shift and the tcc will slip when trying to engage under load or heavy acceleration. If you simply let off throttle and reapply then TCC will lock up and work perfectly until you slow down and have to accelerate heavy again. I'm guessing the bores in valvebody are worn and causing this.

Yeah covering everything is my guess to. When I would reset the p0741 code the tcc would work just fine for a few engages then it would set the code.

as for the clutch disingagement I do know any acceleration or load in 5th gear will disengage. I am also pretty sure under heavy load, or acceleration, the clutch should disengage. It should then re-engage once the load is steady again.
