intermittent wiper problem

I replaced both the Run/Park & Hi/Lo relays ($8 a piece @ NAPA). That didn't do the trick. Going to look at cleaning the MFS. If that doesn't do it maybe I'll replace the MFS before replacing the motor. Thanks for all the help with this issue. Hopefully I can get it fixed.

I popped the cap off the end of the MFS and there is no screw. Looks like it can't be disassembled. I guess I'll have to replace the MFS.

wipers not working

Hi I have a 2000 eplorer us xlt. we have wiper problen as discussed, the mfs has been replaced fuses and relays are ok, the dealer wants to change the motor, this is starting to get expensive,
has anyone found any problems with the module, if so were is it and is it plug and play or does it need programming,

thanks

I have a 2000 Explorer and had 2 electrical problems that were difficult to find but easy to fix. I had an alternator not charging and intermitent working wipers. Both were loose fitting fuses. Banging my hand on the dash above the fuse box would sometimes get them going.

My rear wiper doesn't want to turn on at all. It quit working for a couple years then one day it decided to work for that one day and then it quit again. This is on a 98 explorer sport.

My wipers come on and cycle 2 or 3 times then shut off while in off mode. Can someone tell me whats going on? Thanks

Tell us what you have tried so far.

My intermitten wipers

From what I have read so far I'm suspicious of the control arm for the wipers. I am not a mechanic.

Ok i got a prob to my sprayer funtion works perfect but no spot on the high low works has new relays had a brand new multi pluged to it and a used one nothing makes it work plz help

Here is my problem Hi Low work and does go back into park. No intermittent at all and when I press the washer button it will not stop until I turn the truck off or remove power. I have a 02 EB 4dr explorer and I have not tried anything yet, but I am going to see about cleaning the MFS first from doing a search that seems like it could fix the problem. If I have to how hard to replace switch? Does steering wheel and airbag need to be removed?
My biggest problem is I lost almost all my tools to 5ft of water through my house and garage thanks to Sandy. So I am limited in what I have in tools left except basic hand-tools. All my multi meters and even test lights are ruined.

Also my 6cd changer is not working hope it is the pins that are out of alignment Also when I go into park the rear avoidance goes off and if I toggle the switch it will not go on.

Sorry to hear of Sandy taking your tools.

Changing the Multifunction Switch isn't hard at all. Here is the how to:

Hope this helps out. :biggthump

Followed this thread and a few others on trouble-shooting my wiper. Went straight to the module after reading all the histories. One site had various suggestions for getting to the module but none mentioned that the mount bracket could be removed to more easily access the screws holding the module.
Once you remove the plastic panel (2 screws) and the metal shield (screws), a 10mm nut is visible on the right side structure and another sheet metal screw on the lower right edge, just about below the left side of the ash tray. Remove these two fastners and the whole bracket drops free enough to easily access the module screws (mine were not torx, they were 7/32 hex). Whole process, about 15minute once you figure that out!
Mine was also a bad solder joint. Since this seems to be the primary failure, one must suspect over time current draw melts the solder joints. Only the power input to the relay was melted on mine.
Total time: module out 30 min; drive to Walmart for $10 soldering kit -30 min; solder 10 min (most heating the iron); module in 15 min (included re-removing lower panel, shield and bracket I had re-installed).

I've had the same problem (intermittent modes randomly stop in the middle, move eventually), while HI/LO work fine. MLS replaced in the previous case, problem gone for I'd say 5 years, now it's happening again.

Also, if I haven't used the rear wiper blade in a LONG time, it stops at the outermost point, as if mechanically stuck trying to begin the return, and a minute or two later, sorts itself out. Subsequent uses are fine.
