In reading various postings on the Forum, there are a few references to the fact that the transmissions used in the Explorer Police Interceptor Utility vehicles are programmed with different settings (such as shift points), than those that are used in the civilian models.

This got me to thinking... has anybody found any way, using FORScan, to make it possible to recalibrate the civilian transmission settings to match those of the PIU?

Just wondering...

I think your best bet would be to pick up a pedal commander. Though I am sure someone out there knows how to program it.

Of course, in retrospect... the regular Explorers also come with the "Sport" mode on the tranny (which the PIU's do not)... and all I know is that if I shift mine into that mode, I have to hang on for dear life... so, I guess that kind of accomplishes the same thing?

Mine shows manual mode after the drive. My Fusion had a S mode which was sport mode and it was more aggressive and changed the shift points. As long as I didn’t press the paddle shifters, I could drive it in that mode at all times if I wanted. The manual mode on my Explorer forces it to stay in the gear and I have to manually paddle shift it each time.

I wish I had the sport mode like the Fusion had.

Yeah, my Explorer's "Sport mode" allows you to leave it in that mode if you wish, which changes the shift points and makes the vehicle take off like a rocket. Instead of having "paddles" on the steering wheel, however, (like my previous Edge Sport had), mine has an easy-to-use "up or down" rocker switch on the shift lever, which lets me downshift (or upshift) manually, if I ever wanted to.

Kind of the best of both worlds, I guess!

I saw some threads about @Livernois tunes making a huge improvement on the trans response and shift points. Probably a lot better than police calibration too and my guess is this is programming the PCM or trans that is not a function of something like Forscan would be capable of.

My brother finally rode in my Sport after getting the 3 bar MAP and 91 octane tune from Livernois and he asked if my trans always shifted as smooth as it did for him. There's no question the shift points were improved with the tune.

Ive heard guys with the NA motor get pretty close to stock sport feel in the ol' butt dyno on the Livernois tune.

Thanks for the shoutout! Our tuning for the transmission areas of the calibration improve the shift points, shift firmness, raises rev limits, reduces torque management and more. These changes alone can help to drastically improve performance and drivability as well. Then combined with the rest of our tuning improvements such as increased throttle response, dyno proven air fuel ratio adjustments, additional degrees of timing advance, fueling adjustments, raised top speed limits, etc they really become a whole new animal especially on premium fuel. Most users also report seeing slightly better fuel mileage when they are taking it easy along with an extra 31 wheel HP and over 44 ft lbs of torque at the wheels on 93 premium fuels.

Here's a video example of the 3.5L / 3.7L NA tune in action on the dyno and the street.

That is excellent , glad to hear you guys have been enjoying the tune!

Oh yeah those n/a engines can put down over 251 wheel HP on the dyno with just our 93 tune on an otherwise stock vehicle. The EcoBoost usually baseline in the high 200s so the n/a models with our tuning would put up one heck of a fight against a stock ecoboost version.

Stay far away from @Livernois. You're asking for trouble and will get poor service combined with the fact you will be stuck with their lame proprietary tuner/loader. They don't accept datalogs to dial your specific car in for your specific mods. I don't see how a canned email tune can allow you to maximize your potential.

Get yourself an SCT and open yourself up to a world of other, WAY more reputable tuners, and have the ability to change tuners without having to get a whole new device. I could recommend at least 3 that are head and shoulders above LMS...

If you feel like getting extra frisky, you can even try an HPTuner device. Ihve never used one but have been hearing good things about their recent Ford support.

Point is, they are by far not the only game in town and not even a very good game to be completely honest.

I don't have many good things to say about LMS...sorry.
