Is it normal for my a/c clutch to kick in and out when I'm sitting at idle and the knob is not turned to a/c? I've noticed that when I have the selector knob on panel or def/floor, I can stand there with the hood open and watch the clutch on the compressor turn on and off. Maybe it's fine, but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance for any and all info.

I had that problem before. Now it's back because I have a leak, low on freon. That's why it's kickin on and off, a friend said.

From what I understand, anytime you have the defroster on, the compressor will run. This is because it is trying to dry the air and moisture on the windshield.

Hope this helps.

Stew, the compressor will run in all positions except Panel and Floor.

That is correct. It will always run as long as the ambient temperature is higher than 55 F.
