I have a 2002 ford explorer eddie bauer. My compus in the dash has started showing south or southeast no matter which direction I am going? Does anyone have any idea if it is broke or is this an easy fix?
Your owner's manual shows the procedure for calibrating the compass. I would try that. Think it's page 19 or so. If that doesn't do it then I would venture to say yes, it's broken.
Look in your owner's manual for the recalibration procedure, and try that. It usually involves starting the calibration mode, then driving in circles in an empty parking lot until it resets.
If that doesn't work, look for anything magnetic that may be interfering with it. (mag-mount antennas, speakers mounted up high, etc..)
If it won't recalibrate, and you haven't added any big chunks of metal, or anything with a magnet, then it may need to be looked at.
Mine acts up like this sometimes too. Gives me crazy temperature readings and told me I had "ice" on my car when it was 60 degrees outside. I unplugged it, cleaned the connections, and it's been fine every since.

I bought an 02 XLT last weekend and it only reads "S" or "SE" as well. It wasn't noticed for awhile, since I travelled SOUTH from the car lot all the way to my house. It wasn't until several days later that I noticed something was wrong.
I'll try to check the connection, and do the recalibration procedure when my owner's manual arrives (had to get one off of eBay).
Did you add a big heavy, anything or iron object to the Dash? I'm not sure where the sensor is but you can mess up the compass with anything magnetic close to the sensor.

Well, my compass is still reading incorrectly because I haven't found a parking lot where I can drive in circles to re-calibrate it without getting arrested.

(The guy who is always heading "S" or "SE" - at least that's what his compass says).
