About a week ago my 91 (161,000 miles) developed a new vibration. I think I have narrowed it down to the engine missing. Heres what happens:

1. When accelerating it vibrates pretty bad through all speed ranges from 0-65 mph.

2. When cruising it is significantly less.

3. When coasting, foot off gas, it goes away. As soon as I apply the gas it comes back.

The weird thing is that It doesn't seem to have lost all that much power. I climb a grade everyday to work and it still seems to climb it pretty good. Although this morning it did seem like I was towing something.

Then in the parking lot at work i stopped. Then just let it idle forward and it seemed to be a little jerky or surging. No change in RPM though.

Will it run okay on 5 cylinders?

What should I check tonight?

Brian

Pop the hood and see if it is there. If it is not , then yes it is missing.
I am sorry , could not resist.

Unfortunately I am a better smart a** than a mechanic.
My best advice is to do a compression test. Or wait for some one more knowledgable to post a better answer.

Damit that was the same thing I was going to say! :p

I knew I'd get these types of responses:D .

Took it in to the shop this morning to replace front brakes and to see if they can find vibration. I'll let you know.

What I did was pop the hood with the engine running... and check each coil/spark plug wire for spark. Also, listen to the engine while taking them off. If you take one off and the engine doesn't sound or run any different... than that one is your prob. And when I say take them off.. I don't mean leave them off too.

Take one off.. and put it back on before you do the next one (incase I had to clear that up)

EDIT: DON'T GET SHOCKED. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE (FOR MYSELF OR ANYONE ELSE).

Sorry man , I'll let you have the next one.
:)

If your spark plug wires have a lot of miles on them (like more than 60,000) then they might need changing.

"is my engine missing" hehe.

i got shocked one time, wasnt too bad. my whole arm felt like it got jerked.

I had to pull a guy out of an engine bay one time, because he got shocked pretty good and his hand wouldn't let go of the wire he was grabbing. Before that we were wondering if it was a live wire. His first comment after I pulled him away was, "yes, it was live!". Gotta be careful when working with the electrical.
