as far as I know, the oil pressure gauge in the gen 2 explorer is more or less on or off...

it really only tells if oil is flowing.

check your oil level

I also see you have blue gauges... did you take the needle off and it it back wrong?

afaik the 1st and 2nd gen needles are actual gauges, where as the 3rd gen and up are useless on/off gauges; I know this cuz my 93's needle changes and thats how i know when its time to add oil, and the same thing on my old 98.

Oil level is fine, and oil is not very dirty either.

All my dash gauges (radio included) are a blue-ish green color; I assumed this was the stock color for the 97 mounty.

Oil pressure switch

I can only speak for the 2000 SOHC V6, but I know for a fact the stock configuration only utilizes an oil pressure switch instead of an oil pressure sending unit. I was thoroughly disgusted to find the gauge is a phony. See my thread Oil pressure gauge

maybe. I dont know, I hope it's not a switch.

can the stock gauge be converted? I would love to get real numbers with out adding hokey lookin aftermarket gauges

If it's his '97 they should be blue... '98 started green...

right but his picture looks blue blue... mine are teal

His gauges are stock, but no your pressure seems okay, and yes, they are only dummy gauges, not showing ACTUAL oil pressure. I did read a thread somewhere about converting the stock Oil PSI gauge to a real pressure gauge, it seemed somewhat easy, but nothing that really interested me lol

I guess the real question is... "was it always showing this way?" Further, it appears that perhaps you have a voltage issue as that gauge is also looking low.

Ditto on the gauge being an analog idiot light.

On the 1st gens and the earlier 2nd gens you could convert them to a real gauge that moves with the pressure.

In order to do that you need to short out (jump) a 20 ohm resister that is on the back of the gauge cluster.

On later 2nd gens that resister is built "into" the gauge and there is nothing for you to jump. On those, using a real sending unitl would allow the gauge to move but it would always read low.

Teal, blue, Explorer, Mountaineer. :D

Simple Switch

Dummy gauge fitted on my '98.
After my timing chain fix. I added new oil then cranked it over without spark till I got oil pressure. This was confirmed by a click and the needle jumping straight up to where it always sits.
