2001 Explorer Sport Trad
Hi all! I just bought a 2001 Explorer Sport Trac that had tranny problems. It's Job 2, with a 5r55E. The transmission will go into both reverse and drive, but when you give it gas it barely moves. The transmission fluid smells burnt.

My question is this: Should I try and change the filer/fluid, or is this going to be a waste of time? I've found a used transmission that I will swap in, but if you guys think that there might be a chance that this one is salvagable, I'll change the fluid. Thanks in advance for the help!

ihad a burnt A4LD in my 94 that did the same thing Itried changein the fluid and al that did was make it worse. Best bet is to get yur trans rebuilt but thats the expensive side. Yur probly better off puttin in a used on for the time being. Its all up to u if you want to go thru the prosess of flushin yur current trans because there is no real way of tellin if that will fix the problem until yur already done. Good luck

It's doubtful if a fluid change will fix it.

Thank you all for your responses. I kinda figured that was the route that I should go. Another question: Do you think I need to replace the torque converter at the same time? Would the fluid being "burnt" damage this as well, or can I just replace the tranny? Thanks in advance!!

That's hard to say, would probably be best to do, if you get used get the Converter with it.
