Hey all,

Wife had the '02 Explorer (4.0 v6 awd) out on Friday night. Pulled out of the shopping center and came to a stop. BANG! She said it sounded like they got rear ended. Anyway now the tranny slips big time. She nursed it home.

I took it for a drive yesterday and it is slipping. If I take it out of O/D it slips less. I can baby it and get a long OK I guess. I checked under the tranny and there are no leaks. When driving it seems that it won't shift but some times does if I take my foot off the gas. When it starts slipping the 'O/D' light starts flashing so it is through some sort of code.

Today I will check the tranny fluid and see where it is at. From the way it is behaving and from what my darling wife told me I am pretty sure this is something major and won' be fixed with out a rebuild.

I called around and got quotes from $1400 to $3000 to have it over hauled or rebuilt (I guess they are different). Unfortunately I don't have the money for that kind of bill right now. I am going to price out a unit from the wreckers but I am not sure I want to go that way.

Thoughts?

If I drive it and baby it until I have the money how bad can it get?

Suggestions?

If it is slipping already its not going to last long, also depends on what is failing.

well today I drove it and it starts out in 1st no problem. Shifting to 2nd it may slip and may not. Going to Third it always slips. Each time it does slip I can almost always lift off the gas until the rpms drop and it usually goes into gear. On the occasion that it does not I just need to get the rpms to about 3k then let off the gas and I am good again. Seems like no problems with 4th or 5th.

For now I am going to baby it and see how far I can get with it.
