Does anybody know if the 2nd row console just unlatches or can be unbolted so you can have a walk trough or more room for a cooler or luggage when you want?

My dealer told me that the optional 2nd row console has been discontinued on the Ex. Can anyone verify?

tengator,

This is Seni with Ford Customer Service. I am not sure where this information came from but I can assure you that the optional 2nd row console has not been discontinued. It is available on rapid spec packages 301A and 302A, with 2nd row bucket seats. Please let me know if I can further assist you. Thank you.

Seni

Imagine that, another dealer that has no idea what they're talking about and giving out incorrect information. I think I'd find a different dealer...

Console could be un-bolted from the floor, but would leave a large hole in the carpet and the exposed metal bracket that mounts the console (welded to floor). This is the bracket that is covered by the small plastic cover on the non-console versions. The hole in the carpet is nearly the size of the whole console.

Not recommended.

Thanks for the explanation which answered my question completely!

Yes, probably not worth doing unless we are going on a very long trip and wanted to put a cooler there or something. I'm sure I could order that plastic piece to cover the hole in the carpet while the console was removed, however, probably not worth it in the long run.

Would be nice had they designed it to unlatch from the base of the floor.

The hole in the carpet is MUCH larger than the plastic cover. The carpet is unique between the with and without console. Even with the cover, there will be a massive hole in the carpet with exposed sheet metal.

I got the 60/40 bench, but I always just assumed the console was "portable." The Dodge minivan I owned had that feature... it came in real handy.

Better yet, how about a 12-V cooler? Then you could store some cold beverages and remove the console to bring it to the picnic table.

Oh well... the hole must be the size of the whole console not just the mounting plate. I guess that would save allot of carpet when you start to add it up among all the Explorers.
