Hello everybody, I'm new to this board but I was wondering if our Explorers have the same engine and transmission as the earlier Ford Windstar minivans that were back wheel drive? The reason I'm asking is because I have always heard bad stories about transmissions in those minivans and I was hoping that they are not the same as our Explorers. I recently bought a 1995 XLT 4x4 with 125, 000 miles and runs great so far.

hehe I beleive you mean Aerostar because the Windstar never had a 4.0. The windstar's transmission is a bad one, the aerostar's is a bad one, and the explorer's is a bad one.

Sorry :(

yeah i had an aerostar before the explorer.. and it went through 3 trannies and 200k miles. before i finally got rid of it.
I dont think the explorers trannies are any better than those in the vans. :-/

The Windstar was never rear wheel drive. The auto trannies in most Ford vehicles suck. The Aerostar had a very weak one too.

Make sure to change the oil frequently enough, and pray for the best......

Yes, I meant the Aerostar, the ones that were back wheel drive. So is the motor the same?

Welcome to the boards, i hope you can find what you're looking for here! If the motor in the Aerostar is a 4.0 then it is the same as our OHV's.

Happy trails!!

The Windstar and the Thunderbird shared the same 3.8L V6 in the mid-90's. And believe me, the tranny in the Windstar blows, my mom has one and that damn thing is always causing her problems.
