Is the alternator supposed to lock up?

I've noticed that my alternator stops rotating and the belt slips over it. Is this normal???? I've never seen this. I laos get some hesitation/missing at highway speeds.

I just bought this ('97 with 32,000), and will take it back to the dealer as soon as they reopen (after the holidays)

Anyone have any advice on what I hope to hear to make sure they fix it?

It sounds like the bearings have failed in the alternator. You'll end up needing to have it replaced.
