self explanitory, basically Ford replaced the multi-function switch about 22K ago and its startin to act up. first, my headlights dont come one (we have it narrowed down to the multi-function) my turn signals work intermittently, and now me OD isnt workin. yes it goes into OD (thank god!) but i cant hit the button to take it out and the light on the dash doesnt work. and its $200 from Ford and they have already told me that they arent gonna fix it. does anyone know if there is a TSB on the multi-function for it smoking? thats the reason it was replaced the first time. TIA!!

IM ASP84. He'll probably know. He's installing a 4R70W into his X right now and he has to deal with making a seprate switch for the OD/OFF sense first gens don't have them.

EDIT: His AOL IM is Mr ASP84

No.

the OD switch just snaps out of the shifter. it also includes the bezel too so feel around and you'll find a notch to pry against. take a piece of wire and jumper it momentarily and see if it turns the light on and off, if it does then get a new switch, if not, then it lies with wiring or ECM.

correct. i just bought a new multifunction switch, which is misleading. yes, its a multifunction switch, but in reality, its the stalk that controls the wipers and the turn signals; it doesnt control the OD.

yes, there is a TSB for the multifunction switch, it goes by VIN #. for example, aldive told me his 99 was a candidate for the TSB, and he got his fixed for free, but my 98 wasnt, so i had to buy the switch, and ill be doing it myself (and not all 99's are covered either, got check with your VIN #.)

$51.02 and i forgot to mention that it has the hazard light switch on it too.

theres anothe thread abotu this ive been posting on that i posted a lot of info about this on.

WHAT! the moron at Ford told me like $200, yeah i knew it controls the wipers and all i still cant figure out why they call it a "switch" but hopefully my headlights will come on after i replace it.

heres the part number for mine, though itll prolly be different for your year...

good luck. its supossed to be an easy swap. 3 bolts under the steering column, then 2 screws hold the switch in place and thats it. look for pinched wires in there though - that would be the smoke you see - the coating melting off of a wire. you should replace the section of melted wire if you see it (just cut it out and solder in a new piece.)

so how much does this peice cost? thanks tbomb, the only reason im replacin it is because my headlights wont come on when the switch is turned on, and the high beam indicator in the dash illuminates. so what i think is somethin is FUBARED in the multi-function swith makin the headlight switch think the high beams are on which explains why the fogs wont come on when you try the headlights.

Curtis, your problem sounds like the headlight switch itself. Not part of the multifunction (wiper/turn signals). The $200 Ford quoted you might be for the GEM?

New to X's, but

From what I understand on my 96, there is a lamp outage module that controls all of the lamps on the car, headlamps, taillamps, etc. My headlamps didnt work and after a month of trying to figure why they didn't work I traced to it the lamp outage module. All the Ford dealerships around here told me this was also called the transmission control module. So if that helps you out. I dont now much about how the newer x's work but that is what i was told.
