I didn't know the Silverado SS was out yet?! But a guy at school here just got one. Exactly the same as the blue concept Chevy showed, from the wheels to the funky intake looking grates on the bumper. It actually didn't look to bad, I like it.

But it's not even a fraction of competition for the Lightning, SRT10, and forget about the new Lightning comming out. But Chevy said they weren't going for the class of truck.

Oh well, I liked it and thought it looked pretty nice, especially in the Blue color Chevy used. The first thing I would do is slap a Whipple Twin-Screw on the 6.0 V8. I know the kid so I'll see what else I can find out about it, don't really know him that well, but he's chilled with us a few times. After I left I turned around, but he had already parked and gone to class, whatever exhaust Chevy made to use on it..it worked...that thing has a pretty sweet rumble for being stock.

Anywayz, just thought I post that because I didn't think they were available yet. But I liked it, the Lightning doesn't have anything to fear, but the SS would be pretty sweet with a Whipple charger swapped on and full exhaust and other goodies.

Yep, they are out...I was just reading about them in the latest Hot Rod magazine...I dont remember what it said they cost, but it seemed very reasonable

A girl at the opposing school here has a red one. I heard they were over 40k. Thats not a reasonable price at all. But that might just be a rumor.

only chevy would turn a 4dr pickup into a performance vehicle. if you're gonna make something to compete with the lightning it has to be a standard cab short bed.

I think the 4 door Ex-Cab's are available now, but the regualr cab's aren't available yet. I read the Hot-Rod article a while ago though, so I might be wrong.

The hotrod article was in June's magazine...They tested a standard cab SS, and I think (i dont have the mag here to check) they said it was around $20K

I have seen a few of them....I am not brand particular but I think that the new chevy grills are god awful ugly. I am not a big fan of the SS but I wouldnt mind havin a Tahoe or a pre-03 Z71.

I test drove one on Thursday. There no comp for the L. It lacks power down low. Its like takes a second to build up power.
It rides and drives like a full size truck. They do handle rather well....if you can deal with the super stiff ride. Not only that but there like 10k more than the L with out the style. It was 43k to walk out with it.
It's still a "truck". I think it'll have the same fate as the 454SS of the late 80's.

the SS is ok I guess...sat in one at SEMA. I guess GM knew theyd get struck if they tried to beat the L. Thats pretty sad if it really has that rough of a ride to handle well. Ive been in stock and lowered Ls, they handle AWESOME and still ride nicer than my explorer (well, maybe not on speed bumps).

This might be a weird question but I THINK I might have read somewhere that the SS is going to be AWD. Does anyone know if this is true??

It is AWD.

Really it competes more with the Harley F-150 than the Lightning IMO, and I would take the Harley over the SS.

Stats from most recent Car&Driver:

364 ci iron block w/ aluminum heads
345bhp@5200RPM
380 lb-ft@4000RPM

Curb weight: 5240 lbs:eek:

1/4 mile: 14.8@90:eek:
0-60: 6.3

for comparison conservative lightning #'s:
0-60: 5.2
1/4 mile: 13.8

If you think about it though, imagine the fit all the vette owners would throw if they made a truck for 33k or so, that was only a tenth or two slower the 45k vette

it was indeed made to compete with the Harley and not the Lightning. i like the idea of it... but i just dont like the new model GM trucks. IMHO the best looking truck they ever made was the 88-98. however, there are a trillion of them on the road modified, and you never see one done up in a original way. rollpan+4/6 drop+wheels. its all the same.

It's out, and on average costs the same as or more than a lightning with less performance

a tenth or so slower than a vette??? new vette screams to 60 in less than 5 seconds Z06 does in like 4 flat (3.8 i think) damn wish i had my mags here at work i am a car dude get autoweek car and driver road and track hot rod 4wheel you name it the GMC C3 AWD extended cab gets to 60 in 6.1 so the SS kind of pisses me off considering i own a 70 El camino SS 396 now mine is a true SS quarter mile in 13s every time never a 12 yet too bad i have a flat cam lobe right now

The motor is a bored 3rd Gen Small-block Chevy (As in the 5.7 LS1 in the Vette/F-body) but it was put in the wrong truck. That Silverado is too freakin' heavy. Oh, and you guys calling it a truck...the Lightning doesn't even have rack and pinion streering. It does just fine with leaf springs and reciprocating ball :p The Lightning is MORE of a truck than the pretty boy Silvie ever will be.

I'd have to disagree with you on that one. I don't think there's anything "pretty" about the Silverado. To me it looks like a work truck with 20"s that someone forgot to lower. There's no real ground effects, the frame side is exposed, no dual exhaust, it just has no style.
The L has style. You can always tell a L from your plain Jane F-150.

I just got a raise at work...I think I'm going out to look for a Blue L.

Nono. Sorry I didn't mean it looked pretty, but that only pretty rich boys drive Silvies to look big and powerful. The L just looks badass on its own :D
