I think I have a bad rear timing chain tensioner :/ IM very sad :(

What are my options?

It doesn't do it all the time tho, I have heard it a hand full of times, but it doesn't always do it. This is the loudest I have heard it. There is also a "whirring" noise, and I heard a slight "chirp" from time to time. Could it be the cam position sensor?

Thanks

Anyone? :(

Tensioner

I couldn't tell much from the video but in my opinion if you have the original cassettes in your 98 Sport changing the hydraulic tensioners will not solve the problem. My rear timing chain guide assembly broke at about 150,000 miles. To find out for sure: SOHC V6 Timing Chain Inspection & Repair

thank you for the feed back. I don't know what is wrong with it. It hasn't done it at all today. One of my friends suggested a loose rocker arm or something like that. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Other possibilities

Make sure that you're not hearing a bad water pump bearing or rattling cat shields. If you remove the serpentine belt and there's no noise then you know it's coming from something on the belt. Don't run the engine for more than a minute without the water pump rotating. The welds on the cat shields break after a while so check them.

The camshaft position sensor on the SOHC V6 is an extremely unlikely noise source.

Okay thank you very much. I have yet to hear this sound again.

we replace my 97 mountaineer 5.0 v8 cam position sensor.because it was making a whinne sqeekie noise on and off and the sencer got melted.after it was fixed no more problem!!it cost for the part $75 at napa auto part store.

That's why I thought that. I have a very similar noise as well that the video did not pick up. I'll just have to look into it. I get a noise that sounds like a turbo or a jet engine, just really quiet in comparison.

camshaft position sensor

The camshaft position sensor on the V8 and the OHV V6 are similar and driven by a shaft connected via gears to the centrally located camshaft. The camshaft position sensor on the SOHC V6 is entirely different.

well I have not heard this sound since I posted the video. Very weird, since the sound wouldn't go away that day. Oh well.
