I have a Ford Explorer limited with the factory tow package on it, it has a 4 pole on it and I would like it to have a 7 pole (I have a trailer with brakes) Do I need to rewire the entire set up or would this adaptor work?

And is there anyway to have a electrical brake controller put on my explorer?

I installed a 7 pin plug on mine, I had to run a brake wire and a 12+ constant wire. I also installed a controller under my dash.

That is the correct socket, but Hoppy makes a product with the four flat made into the plug so you don't have it hanging around. Mine is in this thread-

I made a 12" pigtail to put on there when I need to tow a trailer with a short wire, I stow it away when it's not in use.

You may be able to get a Ford harness that will have the 7pin and flat 4pin together. When I got my 00 F150 a few years ago, all it had was the flat 4 pin. When I bought my trailer, I needed the 7pin so I could control the brakes and whatnot. I traced the harness up and found out there was a Ford harness that was a plug and play and reasonably priced. Swapped the harness and everything worked as it should.

I'm not sure how easy you can see the harness on the Explorers though so this may be more difficult. If you'd like the part number, PM me and I'll get it off the box. I didn't keep the harness when I traded the truck, but I've got the box in the garage still.
