99 xls 4.0 sohc
I have a 99 XLS with 4.0 SOHC with 50,000miles. First problem is the power steering pump. It whines extremely loud. It has done it since I've bought it. I've read some posts saying to replace the fluid with synthetic. Just wondered if the pumps are all loud. And will the synth fluid make it quieter.

The second thing is how the truck runs when it's cold. When I first jump in it in the morning the truck runs like I'm towing a 4000lb trailer. It has a lack of power, and it seems like the shift points are about 1500 rpm's higher than when it's warm. I mean the engine is revving high but the truck isn't going anywhere. It feels like the engine and trans are extremely "tight". As soon as it warms up it runs 100 times better. This is new to me because most cars I've owned run better when cold. Richer fuel mix, tighter timing, etc. It doesn't hesitate or sputter or anything just the symptoms I mentioned above.

When I switched to synthetic PS fluid in my 99, the noise went away.

My powersteering pump whines alot, but thats pretty typical of ford powersteering. when i was having problems with my steering i used some lucas powersteering additive and it helped out alot, quited it down a bit too. As far as your 2nd problem that's pretty common. do a search for hard starting and you will come up with the info you need.
