RPM question- is this normal?

Check your transmission fluid, the last 97 sport i had with the 5 speed auto (97+) would not shift into lockup. added some trans fluid to bring it up to full and then it shifted into lockup properly. It was turning 2600-2800 @ 70 before. Another good way to see if it is going into lockup is to get out on the highway and drive up a hill and tap the brakes, the engine rpms should jump up a few hundred.

Ok, let's get to the leak later--

First, try something so we all can be sure what is going on.

I want you to go drive the truck. find a highway with little trffic so you can pay more attention to your truck.

Now, from a dead stop-switch OD off , shift the trans to 1 and start driving, shift to 2 manually, then D manually. Now you are in 3rd gear. Manually switch on OD to feel for the 4th gear ( overdrive) shift. Now, once your speed levels off to about 60-65 mph while holding the gas pedal steady, you should feel another shift and see another RPM drop. This is the torque converter locking.

Try this to see if you "feel" 4 distinct shifts from the trans--

edit-with a 5 speed trans you should feel 5 shifts-the 5th being lock up

I just tried that. At 60-65mph my truck goes to 2800 rpm then settles back to 2500 and stay there. i can feel the torque converter locking up.

I checked transmission fluid level and it looks fine. should i still add more fuild and see if it makes any changes

my truck is at 60mph is under 1 rpm. and i have 30 x9.50 r15 tires. all terrain. what can be causing this.

custom rear axle ratio

Your 1999 Armored Level 3 Ford Explorer probably has a non-standard rear axle ratio to increase driving range. That along with your large radius tires could significantly lower your engine speed at 60 mph. An axle ratio of 3.08:1 was available on the Explorer.

Edit: Even with the 3.08:1 axle ratio, .75:1 overdrive ratio and tire diameter of 29.5 inches your engine speed would be 1579 rpm at 60 mph. Maybe your tachometer is incorrect. What does it read for engine idle speed in Park?
