New guy here, hello all, great forum.Hope I will have some input.

Problem for 2002 Eddie Bauer Explorer,4 wheel,4.6l,94k mi.

The rumbling, crackling in the front front end turns out to be a two fold problem.I replaced both front wheel bearings, and oh what a fun job,for an amature auto mechanic, retired electrician. On the road again, the rumbling went away, so one or both bearings were definitly bad. However once up to full running temp for the trans and cv joints the crackling is still there only when the wheels are turned a bit, nothing when straight. On the jack I can`t determine whether one or both cv`s are bad.Pricing out at $225 for both is no big deal. But here is the question. Can both cv`s be removed and not replaced at all or will the trans or puter say thats a no no..I don`t need 4WD down here in southern Delaware. If it gets bad I stay home.

Also the ABS lite came on after the first repair and still appears periodically even after disconnecting the battery neg for 1/2 hr.What can I do about that.

Thanks for any help for this rookie

I decieded to replace both front cv axles. I wasn`t sure about trying to do away with them and possible causing damage to the tranny. It was a happy thought.

Also double check all the connectors and see if they are seated correctly.

ABS light when mine did that it was the Master Cyl Switch $20, very common failure most dealer keep several on hand . .

With the other sensors the light would come on seconds after startup.
Rear ABS $50 is the second most common failure.

You may want to try the $20 part first, i took mine to midas to have the ABS codes read for $45. The code will tell whats failed or not working.
I now have software for my laptop to read codes.

Bowser Electronics, i paid like $130 for the Base unit then $90 on top of that to read extended codes. . .he sells on fleabay too i think.
