I was noticing this odd sound that I've only heard on my explorer. It happens when it's cold and idling. The idle is rough and it even stalled once a few days ago. I'm not sure what it is, but I'll assume the worst and say it might be the timing chain. I looked up other videos of people with bad chains, and this doesn't exactly sound like it. I've also gotten a pending p0171 code. I've tried to look for vacuum leaks, but I couldn't find one, maybe I'll look again.

I couldn't get any real good audio because I was using my phone to record, that little 3 second but was when it was loudest.

Sounds like timing to me
Remove lower oil pan and check for plastic pieces

Lots of other people will give their opinions

Don't drive that until you figure it out

Where on or under the engine do you hear it

I feel like I hear it more on the front of the engine. I've been driving it like that for awhile, but just recently it's been starting to misfire when idling, so it got me worried.

Also got an oil change around 3 weeks ago, the guys there never said there were plastic pieces, but I doubt they checked. I'll check it soon

You have to remove the lower oil pan not just the drain plug and look for plastic pieces in the pan

Timing chain guides most likely, drop the lower oil pan and inspect for pieces. Also with the misfire run a compression test, since that's a sign of slipped timing. Such a shame really, looks like a really nice truck to need motor work soon

Usually I hate watching YouTube videos because they're too long, taking 20 mins to show something that should have taken 5 mins. In this case I found the video to be much to short. Literally 2 seconds long! I couldn't tell anything from it.

Here's the full video. You kind of have to turn the volume up to hear it over the sound of the fan.

Still waiting for a chance to get the oil pan checked, hopefully I'll be able to today or tomorrow

Hi that sounds like you have a vaccum leak maybe intake gaskets.that will make it run rough.

Replace it with an 4.0L OHV and computer.
