i have a 2000 xls.

It recently started making an odd humming or winding sound. I was reading about others with the same issues and was curious if yours was the same.

Mine seems to do it after I let off the throttle to make a turn and so forth. I can tap the gas pedal and it will stop. I have never let it keep going, but I think my wife did. It died on her and she says it made the noise before it died, so I am guessing if you dont stop the noise it will die. I wasnt there, so I am not sure if it flooded the engine or starved it.

The noise is hard to explain. it gets loud and has a deep drone to it. it seems to run fine otheriwse. the engine temp does not seem to a effect it as it has done it after warmed up and when cold. I have not really investigated it much but i think that the only time it has done it is when the heater is on.

any similiar troubles?

I think I know what noise you are talking about, like a humming sound. I get it when letting of the accelerator as well. If I give it a tiny bit of gas it goes away. I have never had it die out on me though.

IAC, idle air control valve. You can try cleaning it, but if you have that loud moan and the truck dies then you most likely need a new one.

where is this I A V? whats it look like? hard to replace? expensive?

iac = idle air control valve

on my 94 OHV it's on the top of the intake manifold, driver's side. (basically on top of the engine when you open the hood--very easy to get to on mine). It looks like a 5" long cylinder with an electrical connector going into it. It attaches to the intake manifold by some bolts.

pretty much the same on the newer trucks too. its about $80 for a new one from ford. installs in under 3 minutes. take off the plastic cover onthe engine, and its right there staring you in the face. youll see what it looks like when you get the new one to replace it with. its not hidden or anything. 2 bolts hold it on, and theres one wiring harness, and thats it.
