Year, Model & Trim Level
2004 ford explorer
we bought this explorer about a year ago and a few weeks later it started leaking oil from the cracked passenger valve cover. swapped it out and read that it was normally caused from a fail timing chain cassette. fast forward to now starting to get a weird noise that i have in the video. thought it was the idler pulley but removed the belt and started it and still the same.....so just to verify my worst scenario is that the timing chain sound?

Sounds like its time for a new timing chain cassette ASAP before it goes completely and you need a new motor.

anyone? i mainly need to know what specialty tools i need im getting a lift a stand. i have the chain to use like in the tutorial i have breaker bars and an impact drill plus plenty of basic tools. i know i need a balancer puller. but not to sure of what else and if thats the best link to follow.

I haven't done a timing chain, so I don't know the tools required, but I thank you for the video. It sounds like a chain slap to me. Is that the way you perceive the sound?

2000StreetRod is the guy to go with. There is a special timing tool set you need, it must be mentioned in the post you linked to.

As mentioned, do not drive the truck anymore until it's fixed.

Personally, I'd never replace my timing chains because if the engine has to come out for any reason I'm just going to replace the whole engine. Makes more sense having 180K + miles.

further reading of that post says that the timing tool isnt needed and can use the old chain method. iv thought about just swapping the engine but its only just over 100 000 and no other issues at all altho i did find a reman for 2200. a few shops were trying to convince me to let them just swap it with a junkyard motor lol.

so i have the lift and stand, full chain set is on order and have the basic tool set. picking up a torque wrench and breaker bar.

pulled the valve cover and the back chain could be lifted almost completely off the gear, didnt bother with the front since its a mandatory fix now lol

If you are going to pay a shop to do the chains, you might as well put a remand engine in. I'd not use a wrecking yard engine without first replacing its timing.

Now, if you are will to do the job, then I'd pull the engine and R&R the timing, definitely cheaper than an engine.

picked up the chain set today 2000streetrod is there only the one tty bolt thats needed?

Isn't there a special torque tool as well? Or is that part of the timing tool set. Seems like some people torque incorrectly (trying to obtain the measure) with a regular torque wrench and end up snapping the bolt.

well im in need of the passenger side cam bolt, on good push with my rachet in the wrong direction snappped it off lol and cant find a link for a replacement. hopefully the bolt comes out easy

I think that's the bolt I was talking about in my earlier post. You aren't the first and others have gotten it out.

lol i was reading just before i posted that. i can seem to find anywhere that sales a bolt tho
