I know very similar posts have been made but they all tend include rough idle in the picture. Mine is the 2001 @ 150K miles. Around the 20 F mark I go to start it and have to keep my foot on the pedal for 5 minutes at least before it will idle on it's own. It runs smooth, I don't have to rev the engine and ride out any rough sputtering. If you take your foot off it just dies. Right away. No coughing or sputtering.

Last time this happened I was short on time and had to use both feet, one on the brake so i could get it in gear with the other keeping it at idle. Even 1/2 mile down the road if I backed off the pedal to far it would just die and coast to a stop till i start it up again.

New plug, wires, filters and other generic engine cleanings have not solved it. I've not had a chance to see if it is throwing a code. I don't have a reader so I don't know if I could nurse it to an auto shop and catch a reading from it before it warmed up and started idling again.

IIRC, Ford refers to it as a "snow cover". Purely cosmetic FAIK. You mentioned "generic" cleaning, did you clean the IAC valve?

I just checked my records. Most all was done when i bought it at 120K miles. Paid to have the engine flushed, the transmission flushed and did the coolant system myself, but I stopped short of having the intake system cleaned on my own or at a shop.

This would be the infamous IAC valve? In doing some net research I find conflicting info. The Ford web site says you can not clean them, just replace them. Of course plenty of people post info on cleaning there's with carb cleaner. I'm sure ford makes a bit more money selling a new one so I can see some bias there.
I know not all AIC's are made the same but I kept my search limited to Ford Explorers.
I've got no problem just replacing it if that is what it takes. If a simple remove and clean will do it then I've got no problem going that route either.
