it won't start

Hey guys i'm haveing an issue with my 88 ranger. Its a 4x4 2.9 mitsubishi 5-speed tranny converted from a a4ld tranny ( i beleive ). i got this truck with the trans in the bed along with other things. I've got it all together now but i cant get it to start. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the fact that it used to an automatic what do i need to do? I'm haveing to "pick up the pieces" with this truck and i havent a whole lot of experience with rangers any help is worth gold thanks.

What kind of no start? Is the starter engaging? Is the battery strong enough? Or is it the kind of no start where the starter is doing just fine but the engine won't catch?
