I know that phenolic pistons don't transfer heat, which is good for fluid life, though I am also under the impression that this leads to more heat buildup in the brakes.

I've also read that simply bleeding the brakes occasionally will aleviate this problem.

It's my impression that steel is preferable over phenolic, but does anyone want to weigh in? The price difference is negligible.

Bonus Question: I'm not doing the aviator mod, so does anyone have a source or advice on braided lines? I want stopping power!

The choice of phenolic or steel is minor for all drivers except high stress applications(people who hit their brakes hard a lot). It's a minor difference for any application except tough jobs like racing or mail delivery. Very high heat will cause phenolic pistons to crack/pit/crumble etc. So use the one you like or would be easiest to replace. I don't use phenolic any more, it's not good enough for me.
