Without going into great detail, I have an "extra" Explorer. I'm highly considering making it a dedicated off road truck. I'm looking to keep costs to a minimum. Free is preferable. I have another parts truck as well.

What I'm working with is a 2003 4 door explorer with a 4.0 SOHC.

The point of this thread I suppose is just to get some ideas and advice. So far my plan is to remove the sway bars, remove the carpet and air bags, and Lincoln lock both differentials. I'm posting from work right now so I'll post pictures in a little bit.

Any ideas and advice would be appreciated.

So I guest to expand on my first post, I have some questions.

Removing sway bars, good idea or no? I'd think yes so I have better articulation of the suspension and better grip on uneven terrain.

Lincoln lock, good idea? I have a 240v Lincoln wire welder. I've welded diffs before on derby cars and they held up.

What is the largest tire I can fit with stock suspension and little to no rub regardless of steering and suspension angles? What about with a small 1 or 2 inch body lift?

Can a guy with minimal fabrication skills make his own suspension lift?

I don't plan on doing hardcore kinda stuff, just maybe some mud pits and trails. I'm within a few hours of both haspen acres and the Michigan sand dunes.
