Hey, this forum is a bit more lively than www.Jeepforum.com , so im gonna ask this here.

the first mod to my Jeep will be a cat back exhaust. but i looked at Truckperformance.com, and i saw that JBA makes an exhaust and it runs 22HP and 30 Ft/Lbs more power. the Gibson says that runs 10 to 15HP and 26 Ft/Lbs of torque. the Flowmaster is the same.

im gonna get it to exit in the stock spot i think.

i heard a 5.2L Jeep 5.2L with a Gibson, and it sounded sweet. Dead Link Removed

the sound clip is from 8 feet away.

the JBA is $490, the Gibson is $339 (for the stainless) The alum. Gibson is $249, the Flowmaster is $200

i can get them all cheaper im sure. so i wanna know what you think. is the $250 worth the extra money? and what do you think it will sound like?

Thank you!

jba, b and b, borla etc. will give you more power with one of their systems than the flowmaster or gibson. because they do a much more extensive testing process and really do get as much power as they possibly can out of a stock vehicle. however, most of their dyno testing goes out the window if you do any other mods (like heads, cam, headers etc.) then the cheaper (less dyno testing/ less power gained on stock will probably be the same as the more expensive since they both should flow about the same. so do you have other engine mods planned? internals or a charger could really change what i would recommend.

im gonna run exhaust and intake, then maybe headers. i probabally wont change any internals, not until the summer anyway (im trying to get a job at a mechanic's), because i dont have the means or the know how.

right now, im just going to do bolt on power upgrades.

Expo5.0, do you have an exhaust on your explorer? the engine sizes are about the same, do you have a sound clip of your exhaust? im thinking about the Gibson because thats what the guy in the sound/video clip has on his 98 Limited 5.2L, and i think it sounds damn good. but i kind am looking for something a bit deeper than that maybe.

thanks alot, i gots some thinking to do

i don't have a sound clip, but i have a suv 50 flowmaster and my truck sounds like a 5.0 cobra mustang with a flowmaster. it's not too loud under normal driving, but if i step on it people around me want to know what hte heck is in it. since my last mods people in everything from rangers to a dinan z3 have said it sounded great and wanted to know what was up. it also sounds pretty sweet just pulling from low rpms. like when a valet parks it even if it's at a loud restaurant you can definitely hear it. and it has a nice really low sound- more like a really powerful oem vehicle than a ricer or really loud (weak sounding) truck. it's hard to describe a sound (and i can't get a clip until i go back to school in three weeks). i would highly recommend just getting like a 3 inch with a flowmaster welded in it will give you the most bang for your money and will respond well to future mods. also as road and track (or some other magazine) once wrote "there is nothing more american than a V8 with flowmaster muffler"

Thats a link to a soundbite of my Mach 1... It has 40 series non-Deltas, but it'll give you an idea of the "Flowmaster Sound" expo was talking about. modified 351C, long tube headers, H-pipe, duals; thats the stock cam, sounds alot meaner now with the Comp Cam.

NOS, that thing sounds hardcorps.

but what do you guys think about that sound clip of the Jeep? to high pitched when it revs, to choppy & ricey at idle? to loud in general?

i want it to be quiet when im just crusing, but when i go to pass someone, they better know it. is there a muffler that can do that for me? im about to go to the Flowmaster site to see if they have their mufflers on a 5.2L Jeep so i can see what it will look like

on a lighter note, i think i found a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.9L V8 for around 6,000 with trade in and negotiating. im gonna call tomorrow, and if the price wasnt a misprint, and its really got the 5.9, and it isnt sold, im gonna go look at it, and hopefully get it within January.

Thanks, Phil

Thanks!

No, I think that soundclip sounds fine, if anything it kinda reminds me of what a Dynomax Super Turbo sounds like (not far off from stock, but you can still tell its there). I think the Flowmaster site has a clip of a 360 Ram, not sure about a 318, but I'm almost positive about the 360 'cause thats how we picked out a Flowmaster for my brothers 360 Ram. I think Dynomax's site has a clip of a 318 though. If you want a quiet cruiser but something that will make a good growl when you stomp on it, Dynomax Super Turbos would be a good choice (I used to run them on my turbo Talons so I could get a high-flowing exhaust and avoid the bumble-bee sound). Good luck!

A friend of mine has the aluminized Gibson on his Grand Cherokee with the 5.2L V8 and he did not think it made any improvements in power or acceleration but he did like the sound of it at idle, start, and cruising. He did not have any other mods but the cat back exhaust system.

Nos, can you toss me a link to the Flowmaster site and to the dynomax site?

cuz i want to avoid that bumble bee sound totally. i want people to know its a relatively big V8 coming up on them, but i want it to be deep and low and kinda quiet at idle and crusing, but get louder but still deep when i pound the gas.

people will fear the 318. 5.2Liters of fury

Like I said, I had Dynomaxes on 2 different turbo Talons, and I didn't want a ricey sound. It really made the cars sound nice, not high and raspy at all, it was a nice deep rumble (even on a turbo 4) at idle, really quiet for an aftermarket muffler. When you stomped on it, it really got alot louder but kept the nice deep tone. Lots of guys on the vintage stang board really like the Dynomaxs because they're tasteful at idle but at WOT can still be really noticed.

Flowmasters will get a low sound, and get you noticed... My 'stang vibrates the entire house when its in the garage.

Good luck!

thanks alot Nos.

to bad i cant find a 98 5.9L for under 10k :(

that thing would be Hella fun.

i will definately post some pic's of the ZJ once i get it.

see, i kinda got my priorities semi-set up. first thing is going to be an After Cat exhaust. still havent decided yet.

after that affair is taken care of.

im gonna do a Stillen brake upgrade. ZJ brakes are notorious for warping and shaking from 60-0. so im gonna make my 4000 pound vehicle a bit safer.

then next on the agenda would be an intake system.

once that is fully taken care of, i need some ideas....
