To start, my radio (oem) works however the subwoofer doesn't. I've checked all fuses which are good, the speaker itself is good so assuming either bad wire in stereo to amp for sound or power to amp. Any ideas if this is a common issue? Is so I could have it fixed in no time.

Another option, I have a pioneer double din stereo that's only been used about a year and sitting in my garage for another. Is there any way I can install it but still have rear stereo functionality? Then again I haven't tested to see if it works or not. Tomorrow's venture.

1996 EB 5.0 AWD with all the bells and whistles minus sunroof.

More questions coning. Keeps your eyes open.

Thanks!

You have the wrong head end, somebody replaced it. The one that drives the subwoofer is the one with RDS button - they are know to have the display go bad. At least that's what happened in my case.

On the other hand, you have the bass going to the rear doors speakers, the RDS head end doesn't direct any bass to the rear doors.

Mine does have the rds button. I mash it but the light above it doesn't light. I'll have pictures once I figure out how to post. I have no bass out of any speaker either. I've adjusted it but no sound difference. But if it's the head unit, hopefully I'll find one in the JY and hope for the best.

Thanks

The Amplifier, which is located behind the passenger rear quarter panel trim usually take a crap. that is what happened on my '96. almost all of that bass comes from it. so without it, you have no bass. It really isn't worth wasting your time on the factory sub, and amp. Even with a simple aftermarket head unit supplying bass to all the speakers you will be really surprised at how good they sound. you can always put a small aftermarket amp, and a good sub in the factory box with really good results.

It might still be the head end fault, not the amp. That amp (sub) is hard to get to, the whole side panel needs to be removed for access.

I would just get a JY radio without RDS.

I put in an aftermarket sub and new Pioneer headunit with speakers in my '98 SOHC sometime back. Kept the amp. Sounds great. The sub box is a bit of a pain to get out and you so have to remove the whole right side rear trim panel. If you do go that route be aware the the sub is a shallow mount. Only about 3" in there. Also, get some sound deadener to line the inside quarter panel with.

Got done scouring through the JY tO'Day and already did tons of work. I found a couple oem raids that were rds/jbl but in far worse condition physycally. So I guess I'll go the new sub and amp route with head unit I've got laying around. However, how do I maintain functionality of the back seat radio? Or is that a standalone unit? Answer to that question would be far out!

You guys are awesome, thanks so much!

You will lose the back seat radio control with an aftermarket radio installed. For me that was a blessing, my friends thought it was so funny to change the radio on my, lol. You will need the special long harness for your Truck, you have to go back to the amp, and plug it in back there, then run it up front to the head unit. if you decided to be a detective, and crack open the amp, I am guessing that you will probably find two burnt up resistors on the board of that thing. Good luck man, for sure put a day away just to do it all, it's a lot of work to do it right, but totally worth it, don't bother replacing the stock speakers until you hear them for your self.

Reading through numerous posts and forums about aftermarket installs with the jbl, looks like a nightmare. I'm a bit intimidated. So looks likes I'm tackling it full force!

I've heard stories about passengers changing the station. I thought it was similar to say the chevy tahoe had, it was a connected system but front seat could listen to cd while back seats listens to tape etc. Multifunction. But thank you for correcting me. Ok glad to get that out of there. Might just hook up a powere inverter in its place and see about maintaining the switches for the ac controls. That'll be a while.

Today I'll get harnesses and get started. Hopefully be done by sun down and have good sound. Will this harness also include everything I need to make the antenna work too? I notice back of head unit has no antenna plug in... either way, this aught to be fun.

Also in other threads, only 5x7 or 5x8 speakers fit. I've got 4, 3 way 6x9 collecting dust. Once I hear it work, mods tomorrow to make 6x9s fit instead. Oh and don't care about the oem sub. That's getting replaced later.

Thanks for the input!

My daughter would change the stations on me too :) Luckily I had read the manual and know to press buttons "3" and "5" simultaneous to cancel that.

I can see my 4 year old son doing that.

So, change of plans. Hate ordering stuff online and the time and money to out into an aftermarket doesn't seem all worth it to me. So as I'm messing around, cd changer ate my cd, cassette player ate my cassette.good thing they were pieces I didn't really give a damn about, so I think I'll get an aftermarket changer or just find a way to add an auxiliary plug or blue tooth receiver to play my tunes from my phone. Without compromising the integrity of the system altogether.

Anyways, messing around I found the oem sub was blown. I had tested it on a house system but it sounded ok. Of course it's taking all bits of sound and not just the bass. Think that's a factor. So removed again, put in a 6x9 laying around and it sounds good... ish. So I just might go with a slightly bigger sub in a small box and fugetaboutit! Any thoughts for a good sound but cheap set up?

Record, I'm leaving everything stock otherwise. Screw it.

Thanks everyone! You guys are great!
