I have my explorer outside trying to install a new thermostat and I have no clue where to even begin! 1) Where is the thermostat located on my 92 four door explorer? 2) Is this an easy install? I know you all can help me w/ this. Thanks

Hey Brian , the thermostat is directly in fornt of you as you face the engine. where the hose goes to the engine actually the intake. there is a bung with 3 bolts and a neck . pull the hose off, it is a bit stubborn, then unbolt the bung, the thermostat is sandwiched in there with an o-ring. hope this helps.

I will be taking some pictures of both my trucks today to send to Rick. Hopefully we will see both of them on this page. They look good. I am so glad there is a page like this! Thanks for the help on the thermostat. I have already cleaned up for the day so I will try to tackle it tomorrow morning. Keep on Fordin!

Okay, If I am standing looking at my engine is it the hose that is running from the left side of the radiator to the "L" looking fitting that runs to the engine? I am having problems with this little simple thermostat. I was told not to overtighten theses bolts when putting it back on. Is this true? You guys need to give me some help with locateing this thermostat.... ô¿ô

Okay, here ya go. Standing in front of your truck, lean over the grille and fan shroud. You see the assy that comes from your air box (air filter assy). Just beyond that you see a rubber hose that leads into a metal pipe. That metal pipe is considered part of the thermostat housing. Seems to me a fairly simple task.

It's always a good practice to follow your upper radiator hose to the block and that is where you will normally find your thermostat.

Just wanted to give you some good info.
 






Thank you so much for all your help. I thought that is where it was, but I hate pulling things off the engine if I dont know for a fact. Thanks alot.....

so you have to drain the radiator?
 






If you dont drain the radiator you usually lose about 1 gallon of coolant. If you have any pets its probably a better idea to drain it into a bucket and funnel it back to the radiator. If anything drinks much of it, its gonna die. might be a good idea to leave the radiotor overflow box lid open and let the truck idle to normal operating temp. That would let any air out of the system (dont forget to refill it with a 50/50 antifreeze/water mix)

You dont have to totally drain the radiator, just enough so that the water in the radiator isnt high enough to push water out of the block through the thermostat housing. If you dont drain it completely there likely will be water still in that upper radiotor hose, but once its pulled you can look and tell if the water is pushing up out from the thermostat housing.
 






so you let it idle when?
before you drain or while you drain or after or what?
 






After you have everything hooked back up you fill radiator not completely full and leave cap off. Start it and let idle until thermostat opens and slowly fill it up. You will see the antifreeze flowing. When it gets to the top and no gap put the cap on. All the air will be out also make sure the little hole in the thermostat is on top side of the block. THis will also get the air out of system.
 






so leaving the cap of while the engine is hot wont let it spew out of the radiator?
i cant find my haynes manual
 






Go slow when it gets close to the top cause it does expand when its hot but engine wont be to hot cause you just idle for at 10 min.
 






the coolant only sprays when the engine is hot and you take the cap off. If the cap is already off, the system cant build pressure to make it spray
