Junkyard tranny?

C-4s C-5s can be built to handle like 1000 HP. There are tons of upgrades available. I can't imagine that even a stock C-4/5 would be weaker then anything that comes behind an Ex from the factory.

If you have emissions testing in your area you may want to find out if you will still pass after you replace your OD tranny with a non-OD tranny.

Rick is right...

The C4/5 built correctly easily handled my E100 van with 300+ HP and 6600 pounds. They would be almost bullet proof in an explorer. They are heavier duty than the current generation of trannys which were build around the old C3, which was designed as a light duty part for the Pinto by Ford. The C4/5 were the standard auto tranny behind anything from 351 on down. The big blocks got the C6 which is really a strong piece, but too big for most of our use.

Wow, Thanx. one thing i never known was weather i would be making my trannsmission woes go away for a long time by getting a C4/5 but i really didnt know.

This may have been asked before but my stepdad keeps pestering me about it. With a C4/5 will i have to lengthen/shorten my driveshafts? He says that the tranns probobly isent the same length and im kinda hoping a C5 would bolt up and the only change on anything would be the tranns and maybe a tranns cooler line or 2

Thanx! i may just drive my explorer once again because of all of you!!!

Edit!!! My friend has a 351 modified in his couger and it doesnt run. We really dont know what kind of tranny its got but if it follows the guidelines of what Buddy said (Cant remember name) it should be a C4/C5. My friend beleives it a C6 because the engine is very similar as a 400. So do any of you know what kind of tranny its got or how i could find out (By tags or what not)

Thanx again!!!

GeneralX,
C4 has 11 pan bolts and is flat-bottomed
C5 has 11 (IIRC) pan bolts and has a hump/sump in the bottom
C6 has 15 or 17 pan bolts (there are three differnt types of pans)

Hope that helps
If not - check out eBay for the different types to get an idea of what they look like.

The 351M is the same block as the 400, and it is built on the big block platform (with the 429 and 460 though there are some differences), so it might indeed have a C6.

Check out this link and you can just go under there and look at the pan gaskets:

You will likely have to make driveshaft modifications, as well as find the correct adaptors for the t-case and get the right bell housing. On the C4/5, the bell housing is removeable, the C6 is not, it is all one piece. You would need a C5 out of a BII to actually have the correct bell housing and adaptor for the t-case in order to work for you, so your friend's cougar is likely out of the question. If you could find the correct parts from a C5 (bell housing, and rear extension piece and shaft) you could then use any C4 as a core and install those parts, but they are going to be the hard parts to find. They do pop up on the various Ranger/Explorer/BII boards once in a while though.

Driveshaft work isn't the worst thing to consider, as it isn't really all that bad. Shortening a shaft is fairly easy and the places that do that will usually charge under $100 for that. If you have to lenghen one, it might be better to get a similar shaft that is longer from somethng in the salvage yard and have it shortened, or call one of the places like High Angle Drivelines. There are several that advertise in most 4x4 magazines, and on this web site:

Thanx for the replys. Earler this morning the cougers owner told me that the couger prolly is a c6 because it has overdrive. O well. If it doesnt cost too much im not worryed about lengthening or shortening driveshafts, Id just prefer not doing it :)
I forgot i would need a tranny that can take a t-case so the couger is definitly out of the picture. My stepdad is going to edmonton soon and going to see if he can get me a used tranny. I suspect he is going to try getting me a A4LD because he has a thing against putting the wrong part in the wrong veichle (Benificiall or not)
