Just figured I'd share a couple of quick pics of our (my kids and I) trip out today.

He's yelling at me for stopping!

Here is why I need a locker, I wasn't stuck, but I could barely get up there :D

If I stood on the tire I could get it to rock back and forth.
This is just from the front.

If you look close that rear tire is almost a foot off the ground! BTW if anyone knows of some good spots close to the panhandle of Florida I'm up for a little drive to wheel.

The rear sway bar already is disco. as far as specs what do you want know: TT/Shackle 2" lift, 31" baja claws, cold air (about to be a snorkle) lots of interior mods. Anything else ask and ye shal know :D

ah ok those tires looked a bit bigger then 31's

Ok I feel like a complete retard, I've been looking for like an hour both here and on google. I CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT LOCKER WORKS!!! I'm leaning toward the e-z or lock-rite, once I figure out what works :(( Some people say the Xs only come with open diffs, and I can't find out for sure weither I've got open or L/S. Once I do though I still can't figure out which lockers work with with which carriers. Like I said I feel like a retard. Also how, and where do I find the correct carrier I need? Thanks for the help.

There are basically two types of rear 8.8 carriers that cme in Explorers - the "Limited Slip" and the non-limited slip. The two are different internally so "lunchbox" type lockers are different for the two (although I guess a Limited slip could be turned into a non-Limited slip by replacing the clutch packs with spacers).

To find out whether or not you have a limited slip, look at the sticker on the driver's side door. Look for the "Axle Code" - if it has a "D" on it, then its a Limited Slip.

Ok D4, so I've got a L/S carrier. Now who makes the locker that works with it? I know Aussie, and the EZ are for an open only. But I'm not sure on the powertrax ones. And the spacers thing is quite intriguing do you have a link, or is it just thinking out loud?

You're only option for a limited slip carrier "lunchbox locker" (replace spider gears) is the Powertrax No-Slip. If you want a full carrier locker, you can get a Detroit, ARB, etc. If you want to change the carrier out for an open diff, you can do that and can use any locker available for it.

Detroit, arb, there are lots of people who make a locker for your rear end.
You can also run a spool or weld it up, but it all depends on your trucks use.

If its a daily drive you should consider either a selectable locker or a automatic locking locker like the detroit gearless.

I personally love my ARB.

You can always get an open carrier on these forums used or in a junk yard for el cheapo.

Thanks for the info, but the gearless is for atv isn't it? I'll probably look for an open diff to swap in. Will I be able to reuse my current bearings and seals, or should I look for a master rebuild kit while I'm at it? Thanks for putting up with my slow a** today.

A detroit gearless locker is what I was referring too. If I am not msitaken this sucker (about $650+) is fully automatic and will lock/unlock at will...they are smooth, quiet and very strong.
This is the route I would likely go if we didnt have so much snow here in CO (a locked rear end on snow/ice is no fun! So I have ARB's)

I am no locker expert and its been a while since I was shopping, but I think the Detroit gearless is still the primo choice fpr an auto lockers...

Changing a carrier isn't something you can just do any day unless you've done gear swaps before. Cauz its basically the same as doing a gear-ratio change (which you should do now while your swapping carrier). You'll need some tools, none of which are too specialzed but for now, look into a "dial indicator" because gear geometry is often measured in thousandths of an inch.

Yes you will need a rebuild kit.

Detroit gearless is still the primo choice for an auto lockers..
I agree - a lot of rigs you see for example on the Ultimate Truck Challenge ran Detroit - which was perfect because part of the Challenge is driving hundreds or so miles between trails.

Ok I've decided to find an open diff and use an aussie, because I can't find it again, but someone on here said something about having a contact at Aussie for us. What kind of deals is he giving to forum members?

Changing from a L/S carrier to an open carrier you may still have to reshim the carrier to keep the gears setup properly.

As for which locker. If you're talking lunchbox lockers, the Powertrax No-slip is by far the way to go, with Aussie next (only because the Aussie hasn't been around long enough to see how their product lasts). I put my No-slip in May 2001 and have put 75,000 miles on it, and have beat the heck out of my truck and still have no regrets over going with it.
I know of many people who tried an EZ locker or lock-rite and had it taken out months later because it didn't work. The only No-slip I know of failing was in BKennedy's 8.8 and it locked up, rather than leaving him without power to a wheel like the lock-rite does.

As for Detriot locker vs. Powertrax No-slip, yes the Detroit is "unbreakable", but it is not near as nice on the street as the no-slip

I'm confused

Why spend the $$$$ for a whole 'nother axle to put an Aussie into and buy an Aussie, when you can simply buy a Powertrax NoSlip for a little over $400 that will fit the axle you already have and put the NoSlip into it instead?

yup confusing, start taking notes or your head will explode!

LOL... Jefe and I were jumping on this at the same time and made simultaneous posts. Maybe between the two of us the point was made. :D subliminal hint: think Powertrax NoSlip

I'm not talking about another axle, I'm talking about swapping carriers ($50), then adding the Aussie which I'm hoping to get cheaper than list hopefully less than $200. So, that would make my whole install ~$250 rather than the $480 the no-slip costs. Is everyone together now ;)

you still need the master install kit with new bearings and seals for the rear axle, and if you are going to have it apart now is the time to change your gear ratio for bigger tires, etc, also likely the e brake shoes need to be replaced, etc....

it adds up

Very, very true, I forgot about the install kit, as far as the gears go I'm going to wait to do gears until after I do either the RCD or SAS and actually get the 35/37" tires I want. That's one of the reasons I'm trying not to spent too much on the axle right now once I get the lift and tires done I'm going to end up getting a Detroit.

BTW did you already sell the rear hatch off of your 98?
