I'm In the UK :uk: and have just bought a 99 ford explorer :) it has a big daft ford 700rds radio / tape player in it and i would like to take this out and fit a normal size radio / cd player ihave into it. Is it possable to get a blanking / modified fitting plate/bracket to fit the new radio into and does anyone know a web address for such a place and would it be simple to fit the new radio ie. is there a separate amp in the systemi would have to bypass/ rewire

i Have only just got this car and joined this fourom so i appologise in advance if i have covered old ground by asking silly questions but this is the first fourum i have joined and can't find my wqay around it yet

Many thanks

Elly

Go to crutchfield.com and enter your vehicle info. They can sell you the needed adaptor and dash plate to install the radio. As far as an amp goes, I have no idea without knowing the model of car and what sort of sound system. If you have the premium system or a subwoofer in the back corner of the trunk, then you have an amp, if you have the base system then there is no amp. It is pretty simple to bypass the thing though, so don't worry about that. If you order that stuff from crutchfield they can give you a guide that will walk you through everything. Best of luck.

Hey another UK owner. Welcome. If your interested we are having a meet up this Saturday 19th at Stonehenge 11:00. You are most welcome to join us.

Now about the radio. Replacing with another unit is fairly easy. Most audio places stock a blanking plate for them. You will also need a loom adaptor to convert the wires to ISO.

The blanking plate is the same as the mondeo one as is the wiring adaptor. The only bad news is that you will loose the rear radio controls. I have changed mine to a Kenwood unit and I can't work out how to hook up the rear controls.

For pics see my sig. Sorry but I haven't updated the pics for the new head unit yet.

Not neccesarily. They make adapters for those too. I got the ones that kept my steering wheel controls alive for my Eddie Bauer and I know they make them to keep the rear controls alive as well. I didn't think it was possible, but proof is in the pudding. I had mine installed and checked it out myself. It works just like always and I have an Alpine Head Unit with a seperate EQ. Let me know if you need more information on the controls, they do exists.

Well they may exist for you in the usa but over here they simply don't exist. If you have any more details they would be welcome. I would love to hook up my kenwood hu to the rear controls.
