Hi everybody..

After browsing through different forums, boy, am I glad to be in such good company !

I have a bigggg.. problem !
I'm not sure if this is the proper forum.. so here goes :
(I'll repeat my question on the transmission forum)

Just bought a 2004 Explorer 4.6 with 70,000 miles on it.
There is a "knock" when the transmission shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear.
No slipping, no problem in reverse..

I had the ECM reproggrammed by Ford. Solved the problem for 1 day !
The transmission was opened. Oil very clean.. no metal debris..
The solenoid pack was replaced.
Reprogrammed again by Ford..
Same problem.. went ok for one whole day !!!

So.... I'm considering having the ECM changed.. and reprogrammed.
Will it solve the problem ?
Nobody can guarantee this.
I can't afford the cost of repairs to go sky high!
What next ?

The fact that reprogramming the ECM fixed the problem ((for one day) ).. says what ??

What should be my next move ?

Thanks ...

Lionel P

I have a 97 with same problem. After trying several solutions which did not work they were going to replace the "speed sensor" inside the box.Whsn they removed the sump they said there was metal in the filter and needed a rebuild, big bucks.I could drive till it fell to pieces and it would not cost any more so had filter and oil replace and have done 50k miles with no problem.

servo bores? impending doom?
I doubt the ECM would fix it, any codes? Flashing o/d of death, check trans light of doom?
Mine made a funny noise for 1-2 weeks before i lost third gear and Flashing o/d, check trans came on. Turned out the snap ring holding the 3rd gear planetary set had broke and allowed it to machine out its drum till it self destructed. $800 in parts alone, but i had a real good trans guy near me, only charged 1600. Bigger store might have jacked up the price after finding that damage.
Junkyard? Start saving. . .good thing is better than new now.

no codes..

thanks for the reply..
no codes, no flashing lights.. from what I've heard, I'd best leave it as is ! Could be a combination of problems ! Actually, if I ease it slowly into second gear and take my foot off the gas, it won't "clunk" from second to third..
Think I'll just have to live with it and hope for the best !

Welcome to this forum! I've merged both of your threads together. Are you sure that this noise is coming from the transmission, and not from another place such as the transfer case or a U joint? Sound travels all around the vehicle. Does it only happen at a certain speed?

not a noise..

actually, it's not a noise.. it's definitely a knock or a hard shift, a definite clunk going from 2nd to third. After reprogramming by Ford, the trans worked fine.. for one day ! Four different transmission guys have confirmed.. If I accelerate from a standstill, no knock,, At low speed, the thumps is really bad.. hard..
I appreciate your input !

Did you check the bands to see if they could be adjusted? These transmissions have issues with the servos & bands breaking as well as excess servo bore wear due to their angle (or design flaw) as another member of this site put it.

band issue.

As a matter of fact, I did not check the bands. Problem is, the transmission is now "closed" and I don't want to have it opened again.. costly..
thank you for your comments,
regards

reverse stopped working with no warning. First gear and all others work
