Hey everybody...Rey here with a 91 explorer 4x4. I aquired the vehical from a private party and the condition was fair, with the only downfall being the heavy milage on the vehical...topping 210,000. Prior owner said he had done overhaul work so that I had little to worry about besides the basic maintanaince. Well 4 months into owning the vehical and the clutch assembly gives. With the help of a friend, we have been undergoing the repair for the past 4 days and we are looking to wrap it up today. New clutch and slave cylinder are in and I am ready to bleed the system and get the explorer back where it belongs...wish me luck.

Welcome to the site, and good luck with your explorer. And don't worry about the mileage, I've got right at 270,000 miles on mine, and that's with the original engine! These things run forever. I think I've seen someone on here who had passed 300,000 miles a while back!

Thanks for the reassurance... I hope to see my explorer last to and beyond the 300,000 miles. I will do my best to insure it gets there! ...and I will be right there behind the wheel. By then I hope to have some off-road mods and have it accessorized to my tastes, but for now, I will just worry about getting it runnin again! another 2 hours of work and its on! Thx again-

The weekest link on just about all explorers is the auto tranny, with the manual you are much better off. Motor is easy to work on and as long as you maintain it and don't over heat it it can last well over 300k. This site will be your lifeline on keeping it running, there is not a single thing on it that you can't find a fix for on here.

Well, after a days work, the repairs are complete... everything kicked in just fine. Well, the only problem that presented itself after the repair and startup was that i could not shift into either 5th or reverse..this was due to the gearshift lever being misaligned after fastening. The problem was corrected and now shifting is free in all gears. My question is...is there a gearshift lever bushing that could have possibly worn out and fell into the tranny..'cause when I removed the boot, there was no sign of any bushing. I definatly need to perform some repairs on the shifter assembly, any advise would be appriciated, thanks!
