Im picking my first Explorer up on Saturday, just bought a 1998, 54,000 miles Explorer with full main dealer service history, leather etc etc Bodywork and interior look mint, got it for £1800.

Couple of things i wanted to ask, wheres the best place to have the rear and rear side windows tinted ? anyone do any decent kits ?

Is there nythging i should check on it that could be due to go wrong around that milage ?

hi and welcome to our mad corner of the club:D,sounds like you bought a very nice ex indeed:thumbsup:,really just a matter of checking recalls have been seen to,although with full history they should have been sorted, and maybe just confirm that your chains have had any rectification work done (dam i swallowed a dictionary and i think i evan spelt it correctly:eek:),but most of all just get in drive and enjoy, there are window kits pre cut on ebay but may be aswell to just have them done by one of the many companies that do such things for a living.

Cheers for the reply, i havent seen the actual Ex' yet, only pictures, the guys a friend so i trust him, he said the couple of problems that Ex's were renound for having have been sorted at the services but said the timing chain hadnt been changed.

thats a very nice looking ex mate,i di like that colour.

the chain doesn't need changing but theres a prob sometimes with the oilway draining dry and it can cause a rattle and wear,it may well have been sorted on yours with that service history, one of the others will be along shortly to say hi,and to explain far better than me on how to tell if its been done, where abouts are you based you may be close to one of them.

Hi, and welcome, from another fairly new member. Same colour Ex as mine - looks a really nice one.
Timing chain rattles are about the only really major issues with an Ex - there has been a lot of discussion recently about this on the forum, so you should be able to get up to speed quite quickly on what can possibly happen. Even if you haven't got a rattle, there are still some things that possibly should be done with regard to the tensioners - they shouldn't break the bank and are relatively easy to do yourself if you are mechanically minded. You'll get plenty of help on the forum - I certainly have - great bunch of guys - good sense of nutty humour:D

Thanks again, sorry should have said im in West Yorkshire.

cheers

ditto.............WELCOME

Just following up on something someone said earlier in this thread,i wondered if someone can let me know how to tell if the fix has indeed been done for the oilway draining dry ?

ppreciate the help
cheers

I don't think there is any way to tell if the 'pencil restrictor' has been put in the oilway without actually looking. If you go to the thread that has been running earlier 'another rattle problem' it says about the new type tensioner. If this has been fitted to yours, there is a good chance the restrictor was fitted at the same time. Have a look at the top of the tensioner to see which one you have.
