1999 XLT XP SOHC V6
Total cost for long block: $1,000 including shipping. They say it has 105,000 miles on it but who really knows. 6 Month guarantee. Nor core charge , and no Certified Mechanic necessary for warranty.

For those not aware of my saga, see:

I got a new puppy because I wasn't feeling any love from my old motor, not that I really expect any love with the new swap  I am a complete NOVICE!

Some one, any one, wish me luck! -DW

PS. I cannot believe I am dong this....

No way I'd put in a used SOHC motor w/out changing the timing chain components. I'm even thinking about pulling the motor out of the 2001 ST, w/184K, I'm working on (if I decide to keep it) and doing the timing chain cassettes, even though there's no evidence of anything being work with them at this time.

2000 Mountaineer 5.0L 2WD/2000 Expl XLT 5.0L 2WD
2000 Mountaineer 5.0L V8 AWD, 2001 Expl Sport Trac
2001 Explorer XLT 4.0L SOHC V6 auto 2WD (RIP 5/13)

Glad I don;t have those vehicles. If I bever bought a ford again, it wold be the V8, 4.6.

Good luck! You'll get it done. Think of it as a hands-on learning experience. :)

I personally believe the 4.0 is a ticking time bomb.

I would never install a used one.

I hear ya, bad news is you are from the the same state I ordered the motor from. Damn. -DW

I am in the middle of installing a 302 from a wrecked explorer into my sport trac as I believe the 302 is a solid motor and the 4.0 has serious timing chain guide and oil pump issues.

Good luck to you and if you are just doing this to get a couple of years of usage out of your truck then I am sure you will be fine.

For myself I have a $4,000 budget and am building a truck that my family and I can use for the next 10 years.

Good luck to you also. Yep, its just a play truck - don't plan on putting any more than 3K miles a year on it. -DW

Nothing wrong with a used motor, just make sure you upgrade those timing components.

I'm in the middle of swapping a 2011 long block into my 98 Ex. Got the old motor out (205k on the clock, bad chain rattle) and the non-tensioner side cassette on the drivers side was completely broken off and sitting in the oil pan. The tensioner was fully extended. I've been driving with this rattle for nearly 100k miles. Miracle she didn't jump teeth...
