Just Starting Mods...Sugestions???Please!!!

Just register on the forum today. Just bought a 95 explorer xlt 4wd 4.0l v6. superchip chip should get to me today. been researching alot...doesn't anyone like Gibson exhausts? I helped my father in law put the Gibson Swept Side on his 2k f150 5.4L and we both love it. I was thinking about getting it for my explorer...what does anyone think? I like Gibson's quiet yet very throaty sound w/very little airflow restriction. Another thing i would like to know is about the whole intake thing...I personally like the Airaid kit, looks much better...put one on that 2k f150, but i don't think Airaid makes one for the explorers...so, do i go with K&N's FIPK or is the KKM better? The K&N I've seen has some kind of "shield" between the filter and the rest of the engine compartment...this this just for looks or does it help with keeping it cooler and cleaner? I'm not concerned about cost as much as results...if I have to pay more for the best results then i'll suck it up!!! All replies will be appreciated!!!

thanks for recommending Borla, quite a few have said go Borla...just would like to know your reason? Not that I am being untrusting...just curious. How loud is your Borla? I don't want it too loud, just nice and throaty!!

I have 91 sport with 122K miles on it and i'm wondering how to get started on modifications? i want to put k&n filter charger and superchip to start with so someone please help me ????

Ru Dawg,
Most people like them because they are Stainless Steel, so they will never have to be replaced. :)

Too bad they don't make DUAL Borlas...

The Borla to me sounded like the Flowmaster. I bought the Flowmaster first, then a year later I wanted something different, so of course I bought Borla. As far as comparing noise level. The Borla had a quieter low-end, and sounds exactly like the Flowmaster at highway speeds. The Flowmaster was pure rumble from the starting to peak speed.

Would like check out Gibson and Dynomax, I am looking for a cat-back that has performance, but not all noise. I more into listening to the concert hall of my stereo system without adding some rumbling exhaust notes when traveling.

I have the Gibson for a couple of years now and have been extremely pleased with it. The sound at engine start up is great, at iddle is just a low rumble, at highway speed is barely noticeable with windows up or down. It also increased my gas mileage a little bit. A combination of the Gibson, K&N air filter, and drilled air box has given me instant throttle response. When I had 31"s I could dpin the tires pretty good (I also have 4.10 gears). I didn't like the sound of the Flowmaster, it make a rapsy sound, not a deep low rumble like the Gibson. I also didn't like the Borla because of the tip location and the cost. My friend has a Borla in his '92 Explorer and it sounds similar to the Gibson. It's louder than the Gibson when accelerating.

Overall rating for my Gibson (1-10, 10 being best), I give it a 9.

With the Borla, keep in mind that if you off-road, you could smash your tail pipe because it exits in the rear not side like the Borla.

borla or gibson?

well...i talked to tom at ford racing...he says there are plenty of 165.00 borla's left...can't beat the price...gonna go with the borla!!! kvo is right...the gibson does have GRRRREAT sound!!! (put one on my father-in-laws 2000 f-150 5.4L)
