I recently purchased a used K&N Cone Filter for my Ex'. I went to install it today and there was no bootm plate or mounting flange. For you that have purchased them before, was it supposed to have one with it,, or do I need to purchase that from K&N. I would have thought that it was supposed to come with it.

you need the flange. If you didn't buy the outrageused priced kit, you did not get it. If you can return it. Most guys on here like the kkm kit, seems to be the only thing of reasonable price.

Do you still have the stock airbox?

Hartman, I still have the stock airbox.

RealXP8, I was aware of the KKM, but I found the K&N Filter on EBay for $17.00 and couldnt pass it up.

The air filter I got only had the filter and the clamp, no bottom plate or anything. I was thinking it should have some type of mountingplate with it.

If the filter has a large opening with rubber around the edge then you need the MAS adapter. If the filter has an outlet that is already narrowed down with a metal plate then it is made to go in the stock airbox.

The filter at the base has a diameter of 6" and the base of the filter is rubber. I sent the seller an email and he states that he wsa pretty positive he put it in the box, but it is not there. He said I shoul dbe able to pick one up at Home Depot. Yeah, right.

I checked at Advance Auto today and the APC Filter have a mounting flange with them.. But I hate to have to spend another $20.00 for a mounting flange and then throw the filter away.

If I'm thinking about this correctly it should have a mounting flange like what is on the bottom of this, right?

APC Filter

you are thinking about the kkm kit.... or similar... there is an actuall adapter... its a welded or whatever round tube piece mounted on a plate...... not the plastic rubber flange on the filter..... it seems that you basically got a drop in filter for the stock air box for a second gen..... as the second gen explorers used a conical air filter.....

AARRGH! Yes, Jim that sounds like what I'm trying to describe.

you are thinking of these colored pieces as what you need

my moms ohv has a conical filter in a big ole tube box that is connected to the right fender hers is a 96---- some sohcs and some ohvs had the box or the conical filter... ford did some wierd stuff and did it pretty much at random....

Jim, when I saw the first pictures I was thinking "No", but now that you posted the second picture, I'm thinking "Yes". I'm really thinking this filter is not going to work because of the size. It does have the rubber flange on it, but like I said earlier the diameter of the rubber flange is 6". 6" looks too big for the colored adapters. Where did you find those pics?

6" does sound big. I measured my KKM and it is 4". Here are a couple pics with the adapter installed.

Thanks Bashman. Looks like I'll have to try again with another filter. I knew the price was too good to be true.
