anyone eve use one of these k&n filter wraps? they claim it only obstructs the air flow by 10% or something like that, and its supossed to extend the cleaning intervals, but for $30 a pop, i thought id ask before i get one.

On my K&N, it says that the cleaning interval is 50000 miles (I clean mine every 2 yrs just before smog check).

How long do you want to extend the interval for?

heh, yeah right ;) youd better clean it more often than 50k. i clean mine once a year (roughly 10k-15k), but since ill be moving to long island in the spring, where the air has a higher "salt content" and stuff, i thought it might not be a bad idea to pick one of these up - for ~$30, what the hell, right?...but i dont want one if people say theyre useless.

oh, and the ad doesnt say by how much they should extend your cleaning intervals (im looking at the ad in performance products catalog.)

I have seen many oil analysis reports that indicate K&N filters actually let more dirt in than OEM filters. Probably due to the filter being less restrictive. So, you pay the price for more air flow.

These wraps should help the filtering and cut down on the amount of dirt that gets into the engine. I will probably order one myself.

They are especially good if you offroad or go where theres lots of dust/sand. A buddy with a Lightning has all kinds of sand and stuff trapped in his filter he cant get out. I'm lookin for one for my KKM.

If you wanna go with the home made version, get some black panty hose. Cut one leg off and trim most of one leg down, that way you can cover all the filter. Apparently alot of Lighting guys did this before they started findin the outterwears/prefilters.

Do those only apply on the whole intake assemblies or is there one used for the drop in style?

i have only seen the prefilters made for the conical type aftermarket filters... i dont believe there is any prefilter made for a drop in K&N

I would just leave it off. It's not that hard to clean the filter using the recharger kit. Then you get to keep your hp.

It only costs like $10 and lasts a while.

For $30, you would be better off getting an AMSOIL 2-Stage air filter. And it won't let the fine dirt thru...:)

I don't necessarily think that this is useless (although I'm pretty cynical about a lot of aftermarket products), but I don't think that its worth $30 for a stretchy piece of material. I would hit up my girlfriend for some used panty hose or go find a $2 piece of material at the fabric store if you need one of these. Just my opinion.
