K&N Intake not clearing

I installed a K&N air intake kit on my 97 sport and noticed the top of the highest portion of the plastic pipe makes contact with the hood mat and melted slightly, only the textured portion though. I was thinking about cutting a small section out of the hood mat so this doesn't happen more, I have been watching it and it seems like it hasn't melted anymore. (About 300 miles have gone past so far.)

Has anyone else had this problem? And would cutting my hood mat, (soundproofing I believe) be a good idea?

Nah, just leave it alone. Probably not "really" melting, just rubbing the hood mat a little and smoothing the texture off the tube. If you cut the hood mat much you may end up with the whole thing falling apart over time starting with where you cut it.
