Is K&N gen 2intake system worth the money to be able to get more horsepower and better sound?I have a 99 Explorer Sport

I would save some money and go with the KKM kit, www.kustomz.com

Being in NJ with emissions inspections I would get a K&N sticker and put it on your KKM intake. This is because KNs are emissions certified, KKMs are not.

better everything. i recamend it. even just the drop in filter will do something for you

thanks alot. i will look at the KKM's and see the prices and wats up with them

are the KKM's a whole intake system, or are they jus the filter set up?

Filter, brackets, and MAS adapter. There is no performance need to pay $100 more for the intake tube, though the K&N heatshield in the gen 2 kit is useful. However, you can easily make your own aluminum heatshield with a $6 sheet of aluminum.

Alec, would you do KKM intake or catback exhaust first? I know both would be best but if you had to choose one...

intake first if you can only get one.

I've been a little surprised at how many people on here are willing to shell out $90 for a filter, adapter, and bracket considering that many of you seem to be skilled fabricators who could probably quickly weld together an adapter and bracket and then get a K&N cone.

I don't have a welder but I've been thinking about putting together a "shower drain" adapter made out of ABS. There have been plenty of negative things said about PVC contraptions, but ABS seems to be preferred.

I've also been looking into putting together a pipe to the TB made out of ABS, aluminum, or steel... but I need to figure out how those materials react to heat and what they could possibly be wrapped with or painted with to keep the inside from getting too hot.

Alec,

I checked out the link you gave for Kustomz.com. Is the TRUE-REV SPORT INDUCTION KIT the one you suggested? Would you recommend it for a 4.0 SOHC 1997 4x4?

Do you know if it is smog certified in California? Thanks.
Is there a noticable difference when changing from the stock air filter?

As for fabbing up a mass air adapter and bracket I actually did do that and bought a k&n filter for the end. In the end I only saved about $20.

The kkm is a nice addition for all of the explorers. I do not believe it is smog certified for CA emmisions
