I have already searched and couldnt come up with a final answer...
Is it possible to get rid of the chime that comes on when you leave the lights on and also when you leave keys in the ignition? This is for a 2000 so any 91-94 info wont help..

Thanks!!

I have done this for several people. All you need to do is put the key in the ignition(so the thing will chime) and lay down on your back with your head under the dash on the driver's side. Listen for the chime and pinpoint the location. Once you find it all you need to do id unplug the wireing harness that goes into it. Being a 2000 pay close attention th the yellow wires and tubes running under the dash (the ones with the ABS warning labels) you don't want to disturb them and have an air bag go off in your crotch

Ok,
I think I have found where it is coming from but am not positive. Look at these pictures and tell me what you think... I am pretty sure that it is the red wire but dont want to pul anything out without knowing for sure what will happen...Thanks,
Grant

Anyone?

Red Wire?

No, That isn't it. The lines you show in your pics are all vacum lines. You should see some type of small box under there. I couldn't see it in your pics. It will have a plug going into it with more then one wire. It will also have small holes or slots in it to let the chime sound out.
Keep looking. Good luck:eek:

I don't know if I can assist you with this one Fantasymon, but if I were you, I'd disconnect the battery 1st. Then, pull out a wire and connect the battery back to see if you got the right one. I definately would stay away from a wire that appears to go to the airbag. I think you will be safer with taking power off of everything 1st. Good luck

Did you do a search for "chime"? My search popped up our old thread that answered your question nearly two years ago. The fix for your 2000 will be the same as for my '99.

Here you go.

Yea I had already read that. But it was from like 2 years ago so I was hoping there was a simpler way to do it.

What could possibly be simpler than unscrewing just three screws and taping a copper connection? If you follow my post and don't make the expensive mistake I made, it is literally a five minute job or less.

Oh well, do what you want to! We all have our own ways of doing our own mods :)

I know man I dont have a problem doing it your way. I am just not much of a mechanic so I was just seeing if there was an idiots way to getting the chime off..
I will probley try and do it your way either tonite or tomorow..

Thanks,
Grant

I know you don't have a first gen X, but I do so I'll throw in my little bit of info for anyone who's listening.

I unhooked the door chime box today.. probably about 3-5 minute job. The best mod I've ever done :D

the box is a small black little thing underneath the driver side dash, near the A/C. just press your hand against it when its chiming to verify its the right box (can feel it vibrating). I unscrewed it and just unhooked that funky Ford wiring harness that are ****'s to get off (always have to pry them off with a screw driver) that is hooked to it. Screwed the box back in place so that I didn't have to worry about it, and tucked the wiring harness back up in there. Simple, no more annoying chime

gerald so you busted your special key thing for your ignition? thats funny. they started doing that in 98? my 96 key is just normal

Why would you want to disable the chime? If you are tailgating, the door would be closed anyway. Just turn the key to ON, it'll stop.

some of us have too much time on our hands. :p

I guess I have limited patience for annoyances like that, I hate it even for that short few seconds.

Well, I can relate I guess. I disabled the seat belt warning chime about a month after I got mine.

I'm assuming that a 97 would be the same as a 2000, but i tried to unhook mine one time (door chime) and the dome light went off, the chime went off but i couldn't see anything!! I thought there was just one wire that had to be cut, i don't know which one, but did i have the right box?

Happy trailes!

GJARRET...

Well I read those directions and was about to go out and do it untill I realized it doesnt fix what I really want fixed. I mainly want NO chiming when the lights are on...Any ideas??
