Hi
I have another challenge on my girlfriend’s ’95 Limited. It is the power lock’s remote and the associated functions that appear to have stopped. When bought the previous owner said that the remote needed a new battery. This was eventually replaced, but the remote never functioned properly again. Then gradually other functions associated with the locks began to stop. Yet the power locks and the door’s switches all work just fine.

Functionality that has stopped includes the doors that used to auto locking after the car started to drive and as I said the remote that no longer locks or unlocks the doors. According to previous owner – they had lost the code for the keypad (I got that off the unit in the jack space), but it also fails to function. The owner’s manual also says that the seats should select a position depending on which of the remotes unlocks the doors. Clearly there was once more than one remote.

A local garage attempted to fix these features but failed to locate why they were not functioning. Girlfriend is now wife and after your wonderful advice before, I am now expected to fix the car. Having read many postings, I was wondering if this could be an issue with the remote needing to be reprogrammed after the battery failed. Yet I assumed that this would not normally explain the other failures, so is there relay or fuse that controls these features but allows the power locks to function via the door switches?

Thank you for any help and pointers to fix this.

I would concentrate on getting "one thing working"... in this case, the "auto locking" feature.... that removes any of the other "issues" (wrong code, weak battery etc) from the picture ... I think. In this case, the auto locking feature is programmable thru a series of ignition key sequences (there have been some posts on this). You should be able to get it "re-enabled".... if not, your most likely candidate for the "source" of the problem is the RAP module which has "blown its mind"... :-)

I had a similar problem with remotes not working, a local dealership shared with me the sequence in which to re-program the key fobs. Cycle the ignition switch on-off 5 times. On the fifth time the locks should all lock, immediately press lock on the key fob, they should now be programmed. Hope this can help.

You are experiencing classic symptoms of RAP module failure.

Been there, done that.

Take a look at the following post about the problem and the replacement of the RAP module:
