Okay... The XLS came with one key...

1. Are the 2002 keys chip keys or can a plain old $2.50 hardware store key work?

2. Was keyless entry standard on all 2002 Explorers? Even my XLS?

3. Can the dealer tell by the VIN if the truck is equipped with keyless entry?

Thanks...

Nobody knows?

I searched and found nothing...

Guess I could invade the "PROFFESSIONAL MECHANIC" forum and plead stupidity and ask.

I have an '04
1. PATS II, you will need a trip to the dealer to get a second key.
2. Don't think so, but i think you can add it
3. Don't know.

remote keyless entry iirc is standard on all 3rd gens. the keyless entry door pad is an option on the XLT and std on the limited and eddie bauer.

if there is no option for keyless entry, i can install one for you. i live in the chicagoland area and i noticed that you live in NW indiana so its not that far away. i install keyless entry, alarms, remote starts for dealers all over the chicagoland area for a living. let me know.

1. Yes all were equipped with the PATS system(chipped key). Has nothing to do with keyless. I think you have to have 2 already to do any additional programming of one....so i think the dealer is the best bet.....

Okay, Thank you all...

I want they fobs for remote lock/unlock. I just found out today that the ACE Hardware here in lil 'ol LaPorte makes chipped keys from one key. I had them make my extra key and one for my wife's Accord. $45.00 each. Don't know what Ford charges but Honda=$120 and a valet key for my 2004 VW was $150. These systems are great if you live in Newark, Los Angeles, Chicago, Tampa... etc... but for most people that live in Podunk they are an expensive pain in the a$$.

Thanks for the info on your Chicagoland business with alarms and remote set-ups! I will (hopefully) drive it to the dealer in next few weeks and have Service Manager Earl look at the VIN and tell me if he can get the fobs. I did the same thing for my '96 Limited but it was pretty obvious that a lux barge would have the remote fob...

For the Remote entry, to see if you have it, try this...

Get your key, pop it in your ignition. Cycle the key from the Off position to the on position (But don't crank it) anywhere from 5 to 8 times. If your car has the remote feature, it should unlock and lock all the doors in the vehicle. This tells you that the car is ready to be programmed for a wireless remote (basically letting you know you have the remote unlock feature)

From there, get a keyfob (get good ones online), Make it go into programming mode, and hold down a button on your remote, and there ya go.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

False. My 2004 XLS was NOT equipped with keyless entry.
