I have a stock 95 Ford Explorer I just received. The ignition is missing the gear for the key lock cylinder and is very worn out from using a screw driver on the inside to the point a new key lock cylinder will not fit right. Instead of sourcing a steering column, is there a way to use a toggle switch(s) and push start button to start and run the vehicle? I have access to the ignition harness and have put the ignition to run and tried connecting the yellow and red/blue wire together, but it just turns the starter 2 times and quits. If i hit the solenoid with a screw driver with the ignition switch to run it starts. I already ordered a push start with relay and two toggle switches. Any help would be appreciated. My goal is to have one toggle switch for the ignition system, one for accessories and the push button to start. If I need more please let me know.

I feel a bit Dumb atm. I was using a test light i made, so instead i used a strand 12awg boat wire i had left over to connect to the red/blue starter wire to the yellow wire. Works for me now. Thanks for being here though Forum cause it sure has been a lot of help for me.

I'm trying to do the same, do you have a picture of what you've done? A wiring diagram?

Ill post a picture when I take one tomorrow. All I have done is cut the two yellow wires until my switches arrive. I am going to wire a 20amp switch between both. so 2 x20amp toggles then I will add a push button to the switched side of one of the constant yellow wires and the red/blue starter wire. I have turned the gear in the key lock to on/run. All this does is allow the car to be powered on in the run position by two switches, one switch will power things on but you need both so there is enough amperage to run everything. A momentary switch with a relay is used to start the vehicle. I need to also put in another switch for Accessories but I can remember which wire it is, ill get back to you on that.

I found a schematic for the small relays in the vehicle in case you have an extra and need it for your own push button. I was going to use the route but just bought a push start kit since it was only about $15.00.

I'm not sure if the toggle switches need to be a higher amperage or not, but it doesn't hurt any thing. I would not go lower than 20 amps though.

Fixed the previous post. Added the link that I forgot. Sorry about that.

albi1cnobi1 - How did you connect the two wires to the relay and what amperage relay did you use? I should be fine with two 20 amp toggle switches correct?
