I'm thinking of getting a kkm but i've heard that somehow drilling the airbox will do the same thing w/a k&n filter in it. I have no idea how the drilling is done and if it's hard to do....i'd appreciate it if someone would enlighten me.

Just remove the air box from the vehicle cut holes into the lower part of the box and then reinstall the box and air filter. How much you cut away is up to you. I suggest cutting a few 2 inch holes at firstand then try it out. See if you like the gains if not cut some more away until you do. Some people have cut the sides out of the lower box leaving just enough left to hold the filter in place. Give it a try, its free. If you don't like the results buy the KKM. Your not out anything. Hope this helps.

Cutting out the sides of the airbox isn't that hard at all. You can start by either drilling pilot holes and using either a saber saw or hack saw to cut the sidewalls out. Or if you prefer, you can buy a hole cutter with a couple of different sizes for holes two to three inches. Using a electric drill, cut the holes out close together. As for the differences in performance between the KKM and the modified airbox, check this link out: http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001775.html
I have a 91XLT with a modified airbox and it works great! Hope this helps.

I put a KKM on my Explorer last week. It is a simple install (I am not very mechanical either). It takes about 5 minutes to pull out the existing air box. The KKM attaches easily by screwing it to the mass air senor. There is also a piece that screws to the inside of the engine compartment (using a hole that used to hold one of the original air box grommets). You should have no problem. I was really happy with the install and the resulting increase in pickup.

I like the KKM over drilling the airbox because it leaves me with the option of switching back to stock if I have need to. This may be something to consider if you ever need to bring the vehicle in for service.

Good luck
