I have a knocking noise coming from my right rear on my 02 Explorer sport when I hit a pot hole or go over rough railroad tracks. I checked my shocks and I did'nt see anything loose. I'm going to replace my shocks soon but I don't think that will fix the knocking noise.

When you say knocking noise does it continue after going over the bump? is the ride any different than when you purchased it?

Thanks for the response, No it stops right after i hit a bump and the ride has got a little rougher over the past few years especially When I hit a uneven surface in the road.

Possibly a loose exhaust pipe/exhaust pipe hanger. If it were that, the rougher ride is coincidence and likely caused by normal bearing and shock wear.

I just got a 2001 used Explorer Sport and have the same EXACT problem. It's making me crazy. I JUST spent $226 on the best Monroe shocks and still the problem persists. It's like something is tapping or loose or jarring. My son and I were thinking it was the tire since it's just held in by a cable. But it seems secure. This is really bumming me out because the vehicle is great otherwise. This is very annoying. I should've driven it a little further on the test drive. Grrr.

I found out what it is BAD WORN BUSHINGS. Atleast 4 of themBody mount bushings to be exact..
