If you crawl under the truck you’ll definitely find it. The driveshafts will connect to the t case. On the t case will be an electric motor. It’ll be obvious once you’re under there.

It’ll look like this bugger.

Shift motor is on the back end of the tcase, possibly hidden by the round damper weight.
Find the shift motor rebuild thread and read it a couple times through before attempting to remove and fix it.

good job thus far!!
You found and tested the ESOF or 4x4CM as they call them (electronic shift on the fly, or 4x4 control module)

Now to find and remove the shift motor!!
removal requires a 10mm socket

AS @RangerX pointed out you should read the fix it thread!!

Otherwise next time I am in Spokane we can do this together

I found and started to remove shift motor. I ran into trouble with two wires that go from shift motor to transfer case. I posted picture. I can't figure out how to remove them from transfer case. In the picture they are a little over half way down. One is blue the other is brown. The blue one has a housing type thing that will spin on its base. The brown one goes straight into the transfer case. On the motor side there's no plug. They just go straight into the motor.

I got a shift motor from a you pull wrecking yard and cut the wires that attached to the transfer case and took it to a mechanic that does work for me that is over my head. He showed me how to remove the wires. He showed how to use a pick to remove the red insert and the tabs that hold the plugs in. His pick was bent at an angle at the end. It worked great. I have replaced my shift motor and my button shifts my explorer into 4wd again. Thanks for all the help
