Hopefully some of you Explorer nuts can help me!! My front differential is leaking ever so slightly. At least I think you call it that. It is seeping very slowly from where the drive shaft enters the housing. Nothing is dripping on the ground, just a light clear coat of oil on bottom. Is this something I should address immediately or is it something that just happens and can be repaired when its severe?

Thanks for your help.

Explorer nut!! I resemble that remark! LOL I'd first check the fluid level to make sure it's not low(if you can, I'm not sure how the newer models are). Being a 98 I would think it would still be under warranty, so you could take it to the dealer for a fix, though I wouldn't think it was anything more than a seal(hopefully). You might also want to clean the area and check to find out if that is where it is leaking and not just seeping from somewhere higher. Good luck.

I agree with Goober - probably just a seal. Make sure your fluid level is full, and don't worry too much about it. Think about how miles you are in 4x4 as opposed to 4x2. The front diff doesn't see that many miles.

If you can find a reputable dealer, have it fixed. Otherwise, just watch the fluid level. Eventually, you will need to change it, as it wears - but if you can wait, no harm done.

One thing - check your fluid after deep water crossings. If oil can come out past the seal, water may seep in.
